Both countries wanted to be the worlds powerful leaders…. ADVANTAGE : send nuclear missiles from space

Started with Russia sending the Sputnik to space

By sending many spaceships to space… First sent a dog to space then had to figure out how to make the rocket come back to Earth.

Sending people to the moon…. They wanted to see which power would be first to land on the moon.

The United States had different civilian and military agencies, and the military space programs were secret. The run to the Moon, were widely available for the world to see.

In the Soviet Union, all space programs were put into a secret military-industrial bureaucracy. Only successful missions were publicized.
