Low Emissivity GlassFact

Home and office buildings tend to lose 25% of their heat through windows

Benefits of Low E-Glass• 40-50% better insulation performance compared to

normal double pane glass • Lower heating and cooling costs

• Blocks ultra violate light

Cost• Low-E Glass costs more than traditional double pain

glass but the long term heating and cool savings justify its costs

Page 32: Smg Presentation

LED Lighting TechnologyBenefits

• Improved night visibility due to higher color rendering• Longer life spans compared to incandescent bulbs• Use less energy while producing more light• Do not need to be maintained as often

• Have a low environmental footprint with no mercury, lead or other disposable hazards

Page 33: Smg Presentation

LED Lighting TechnologyCosts

• LED lighting may cost more up front than incandescent bulbs, but the long term benefits of LED lighting are can save more money in the long

run• costs $500-600 for an LED street light

• LED Bulbs last up to 25 years compared to traditional street light which only last for 5-7 years

Future • Pilot project to measure the energy savings

• Use that data to reinforce the need to for the city to switch to LED lighting to conserve energy and

reduce costs

Page 34: Smg Presentation

Radiant Heating and Cooling

What?• Using Electric/ Hydronic radiant energy to heat and cool

each of the new buildings using solar water heaters and coolers in combination with electricity

Benefits • Traditional air-based heating and cooling units use a lot of

energy to regulate the temperature• Radiant panels are able to quickly warm rooms

• Very efficient when paired solar heating and cooling systems

Costs• Radiant heating and cooling systems are more expensive to maintain but the long term saving in hydro expenses will

pay for the system over time

Page 35: Smg Presentation

Photovoltaic FilmWhat?

• Convert solar energy into usable electricity is a photovoltaic (PV) system

• Energy is created when photons from sunlight knock electrons into a higher state of energy, within the cell

Benefits • Can harvest as more energy from the sun than

traditional solar cells • Use 100 times less semiconductor material to make

photovoltaic film• Perform better under high-temperature conditions,

are lightweight, and are not fragile

Costs• PV Film is cheaper than normal PV cells and cost less

Page 36: Smg Presentation

Kinetic Speed BumpWhat?

• The kinetic speed bump is its ability to generate its own electricity from cars that

travel on top of it

Benefits • speed bump at 5km/h is able to generate

2000 watts of electricity

Costs• Kinetic speed bump are more expensive

than traditional speed bumps but the electricity generated will over cover its costs

Page 37: Smg Presentation

Stormwater ManagementRain Gardens

What?• rain gardens along the sidewalks that will

naturally filter runoff water as they require very little maintenance

Benefits• allows plants to retain and intercept rainfall by

taking up the water from the soil• regulates the flow of stormwater and naturally

filters it

Cost• cost effective method of capturing water from

the roads and slow the velocity of runoff

Page 38: Smg Presentation

Stormwater ManagementCurb Extensions

What?• curb extensions are simply landscape areas along the

parking zones of roads that capture the storm-water

Cost• low costs and little maintenance

Page 39: Smg Presentation

Stormwater ManagementCurb Extensions

Page 40: Smg Presentation

Stormwater ManagementGreen Gutters

What?• Green gutters are very narrow, landscape systems along streets and are less than 3 feet wide and very shallow with little to no water

retention

Benefits• Help filter out pollutants and slow the flow

of water• Help provide a landscape buffer between

auto traffic and pedestrians

Cost• low costs and little maintenance
