Using Smart Classrooms for
Distance EducationBringing the campus classroom to distance
students.
Christine Crawford and Richard Van EckInstructional Design and Technology
The Problem
The Instructional Design and Technology program needed to accommodate students at a distance.
The Goal
Bring the classroom to students at a distance with modification but little sacrifice of pedagogy and interaction
The Solution
A hybrid blended approach:
Hybrid = both synchronous and asynchronous
Blended = both in person and at a distance
• Began by utilizing the distance technology available in the Aerospace department
• Worked with Center for Instructional & Learning Technologies (CILT) to design less expensive, more accessible technology within the department (ED 202 and 308)
The Technology
Breeze – now Adobe Connect ProOne of many web conferencing packages (Desire2Learn, Eluminate)Lets you seamlessly see and be seen; hear and be heardAllows you and students to share (show) your computer screen & applicationsHost of other features (quizzing, chat, notes, whiteboard, etc.)
Audio conferencing by phoneVoIP poor through Breeze Bandwidth sensitive (choppy, lag time)
HTML-eZ and BlackboardBuild a course quickly and flexibly in HTML-eZ using Word, PDF, PowerPointThreaded discussion with grading in Bb
