SHAPE MEMORY APPLICATION FOR
NUCLEAR SAFETY OR
PROLIFERATION
Our topic

NUCLEAR DISASTER
Chernobyl 1986 Fukushima 2011
Shape Memory Materials (SMM)
What is it?
Shape memory materials are
materials which can ‘remember’
its original shape, and can revert to the pre-deformed shape by external stimulus(temperature, light, voltage,
etc.).
How is it classified
SMM
Shape-memory hybrids
shape-memory polymers
shape-memory alloy
shape-memory ceramic
Why do we choose it?
Reverts to its
original shape
Good flexibility
and elasticity
Nuclear Power Plant How the nuclear reactor works
Applications In Nuclear Safety
♦ Direct-action(self-operating) emergency systems
♦ Nuclear radiation protective clothing

Thermal Mechanical
NI-Ti-Pt alloy (SMA)
Thermal: Thermal: undergoing martensitic transformation at temperatures exceeding 300ᵒC
Mechanical: Mechanical: Hardness properties
From the Ashby’s diagram, Ni alloy shows interesting properties that justifies its use in terms of:

• Lead clothing is generally used for high level nuclear radiation protection.
• POLYCAPROLACTONE is biodegradable polyester that exhibits shape memory effect when exposed to radiation (Gamma rays).
• Its crystallinity increases as radiation dose increases.
• An outer layer of polyester (polycaprolactone) incorporated in the Pb clothing provides additional protection from nuclear radiation.
