Session 3Cluster workshop introduction

• During the Irish Future Internet Forum we hosted a panel session on cross domain topics from across SFI research. This session was chaired by Nick Wainwright from Hewlett Packard, UK who plays a significant role in the European Future Internet Assembly. Panellists included Prof. Linda Doyle, TCD, Prof. Stefan Decker, NUIG, Prof. Vincent Wade, TCD, Prof. Doug Leith and Dr. Tom Dowling, NUIM. Each panellist gave a short presentation on insights into their own research area; this was followed by a question and answer session.

• Subsequently each panellist joined a pre-defined cluster group of approximately 10 members.

The cluster topics included Internet Security, Wireless communication systems, Semantics in the Future Internet, IoT (sensors and embedded systems) and Service Delivery in the Future Internet. Each cluster was given a possible approach to take for the discussion. The cluster members were to raise a question around the Future Internet, identify problems, issues and the downfall of the current Internet. To encourage some group interaction and participation each cluster member was asked to write a word or two on a post-it note, these were collected and used as input to visualization output: http://manyeyes.alphaworks.ibm.com/manyeyes/visualizations?q=ifif and output from wordle application as illustrated on the next slide.

• Cluster chairs presented their results to the IFIF, output from the cluster was a slide describing a possible way forward, what could / should the Future Internet do.
