Applications
Supporting sustainable eHealth services
in Africa
Sub-Saharan Telemedicine initiative
SAHEL – Satellite African eHEalth
VaLidation
Cornerstone demonstration project for the
establishment of a future pan-African satellite-
enhanced e-Health platform
Project objectives:
• Bringing professional education through tailored
content to nurses in remote areas
• Establishing electronic communications between
healthcare facilities in isolated areas and
medical centres of excellence
• Collecting health data from pilot sites and make
it available to the health community
12
SES provides Broadband connectivity and
Multicast services to pilot sites in Kenya
and Senegal in cooperation with NGOs
(AMREF and Le Kinkeliba) and with
specialized content provider (UNF3S).
Sway4EDUBroadband access via satellite to promote ICT in Africa
Developing a satellite ICT (Information and Communication
Technology) solution to support three main activities
contributing to overcome isolation and lack of terrestrial
infrastructures among different African communities:
• Rural Radio
• Assisted radio services to support agricultural
development in DRC
• Space4Edu
• eLearning service to support education in rural schools in
South Africa
• Electoral e-Training
• Online services and courses for electoral management
bodies of ECCAS to support their electoral cycles
SBBS provides:
• Broadband infrastructure to access the e-Government content
• The end-user equipment (CPEs)
• The satellite capacity for:
• Broadband connectivity to a network of 66 SES
Broadband terminals.
• Multicast content delivery to the terminals
SES Broadband provides Internet
connectivity to communities in
isolated areas granting access to
ICT and e-Government services

« Classroom In A Box »
Addressing key challenges in education
Space for Education initiative
Initiative to provide an economically sustainable
platform for accessing learning content.
All inclusive, pre-tested and easy to deploy solution
that provides a complete classroom lab for schools
Addressing primary and secondary schools in rural
areas of the African continent (SSA)
Project objectives:
Bringing knowledge and ICT skills to the youth
and allowing to teach using web-based learning
tools
Enhancing the quality of education
Integrating creative learning forms
14
The initiative is launched in collaboration
with Microsoft and N-Computing.
SES Broadband Services provides
broadband connectivity to the deployed
classroom labs.“Our schools are in remote locations
and need solutions that are robust,
simple and connected.”
SES Broadband Services facilitated
satellite broadband connectivity in
support to the election process in Burkina
Faso
• In partnership with Commission Electorale
Indépendante (CENI) SES Broadband Services
implemented satellite communication platform to
support the municipal & legislative elections that
took place on December 2, 2012.
• SES Broadband Service provided satellite
broadband connectivity to 45 electoral district
offices and central site in Ouagadougou allowing
for the secure collection and transfer of electoral
data between the provinces and central.
• The electoral offices and the central site has
been equipped with VSAT terminals, cameras
and video conference equipment
• Equipment installations has been carried out by
local partners – Access-Sat (VSAT) and Unicom
(video equipment)
Implemented system supported
the following applications:
• Data collection (FTP)
• Video-conferencing
• Visio-surveillance
• VOIP

SatFinAfrica - SES Broadband for
microfinance institutions
Microfinance institutions are a fast growing market in
developing countries but remote sites are not well served with
adequate telecommunications means
• Challenge to offer same level of QoS in remote sites as in main cities
• Concern with IT security and reliability of their communication network;
Remote sites are often too small to justify the investment in a classic corporate VSAT and terrestrial mobile services are not adapted for business-critical transactions
• A major constraint is the availability versus price;
• Data consumption volumes for remote sites are not always clear, even to the IT managers;
SatFinAfrica is a joint initiative between SES, ESA and local ISP to develop a pilot project with African partners with the aim to offer a corporate service, tailored to the needs of financial institutions
The project addresses the three main following applications: Money Transfer, ATMs and VPN
On-going tests & countries
Video available on:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mKVCJLxjG8Q
Money Transfer Company (MTC) user profile:
• Large number of branches spread all over the country
• Typical remote branch has a small LAN with 3-5
computers and telephones
• Need for reliable and affordable telecommunications
MTC User Applications:
• International/national financial applications based on client-server transactions
• Own Client-server banking applications (e.g. accounting etc.)
• Telephony and Office Applications (Email, web browsing…)
MTC networks using SES Broadband service:
• Over 100 operational sites in Cameroon and new customer starting operations in Ivory Coast
• Excellent results in terms of service availability and operational transactions
Money Transfer (MTC)
A large number of ATMs in non-bank locations have
been put in operations in recent years
• These so-called off-site ATMs can be located in
very remote areas and need a reliable and
secured communication system to authenticate
and authorize transactions.
ATM user profile:
• Bank Consortiums operating ATM
networks
• Banks
ATM User Applications:
• Connect ATMs outside of bank premises
• Authenticate and authorize transactions
• Closed Users Group (private IP
addresses)
• VPN tunneling on the Internet
Automatic Telling Machine (ATM)
