Observing

Science Process Skill

•Using one of more of your senses to gather information•Involves using tools to help you make observations•Can be quantitative (observations involving numbers ex. She is watching 2 chimps.) or qualitative (observations involving a characteristic or quality of the thing being observed ex. The chimps are sitting on the ground.)

Inferring

Science Process Skill

•Explaining or interpreting the observations you make.•It is not guessing•It is using reasoning to provide an explanation for what you observe.•Inferences can also be assumptions about your observations.

Predicting

Science Process Skill

•Making a statement about what will happen in the future based on past experience or evidence.•Predictions – explain what will happen Inferences – explain what is happening

Making Models

Science Process Skill

•Creating representations of complex objects or processes.•Can be: maps, computer programs, mathematical equations, etc.•All models have limitations.•No models completely represents what it is supposed to be.

Classifying

Science Process Skill

•Grouping together items based on some characteristic of the item•Look at the map on p. 11. How were Jomeo’s movements and behavior classified?•Resting, climbing, feeding.•What are some things we classify in real life?•Music, food, books, …

Evaluating

Science Process Skill

•Comparing observations and data to reach a conclusion•Can support hypothesis or not support hypothesis.
