An interdisciplinary area which allows inexpensive and continuous health monitoring with real-time updates of medical records through the Internet.

In these networks various sensors are attached on clothing or on the body or even implanted under the skin.

The sensors of a WBAN measure e.g. the heartbeat, the body temperature, the glucose level etc

IEEE 802.15.6 is a new standard for Body area networks

What BAN contains ?

• Bio-Sensors: It is used to measure the vital signs on the human body

• Transceivers : Devices transmits and receives data

• Processors : analyzes the data and manages the system

• Battery: Supplies power

very small biosensors are implanted inside the human body that are comfortable and that don't impair normal activities.

These sensors collect various physiological changes in order to monitor the patient's health status no matter their location.

information will be transmitted wirelessly to an external processing unit and then instantly transmit all information in real time to the doctors

If an emergency is detected, the physicians will immediately inform the patient through the computer system by sending appropriate messages or alarms

Specific requirements:

1. Ultra low power consumption: This constraint exists to allow sensors to have the smallest batteries

2. Suitable sensors: Sensors should be small; they must not hinder users’ life.

3. Lifetime: Sensors must have a long lifetime, particularly

Network requirements:1. Range: BAN allow the sensors in on or around the

same body to communicate with each other, so 2-5 meters range is enough

2. Interference: interference among the sensors should be suppressed as much as possible to satisfy reliable wireless communication.

3. Network density: BAN standard allows 2-4 networks per m2.

4. Sensors number per network: BAN standardization group expects a maximum of 256 devices per network

5. Security/encryption: The transmitted data needs to be protected

such as diabetes , asthma and heart attacks. e.g. If high sugar level detected, a device triggers an insulin pump to inject a dose of insulin

• Alerting the patient via SMS, alarm or reminder messages

• Reduction in hospital stays• Regulation of treatment regimes

Limitations:

unwieldy wires between sensors and a processing unit

lack of system integration of individual sensors

interference on a wireless communication channel shared by multiple devices

Security and Privacy challenge.

CONCLUSIONThe WBAN is an emerging and promising technology that will change people’s healthcare experiences revolutionarily.

Data security and privacy in WBANs and WBAN-related e-healthcare systems is an important area, and there still remain a number of considerable challenges to overcome
