WHAT ISSAFECAST

We are a volunteer organization that was established a week after the Japan 3/11 earthquake. In cooperation with other groups, including Tokyo Hacker Space, Keio University and MIT Media Lab, we have constructed a radiation sensor network of Geiger counters placed throughout Japan, including within danger zones. Although the organization is global, with more than 100 volunteers working throughout the world, the majority of our efforts are currently focused in Japan.

SAFECASTGOAL
We feel that there has been an inadequate amount of information regarding radiation levels made public in the wake of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Plant disaster. Our aim is to gather radiation level data from across Japan and share it publicly. We at SAFECAST feel the more information is available, the better. By adding our measurements to existing data, we can build a more accurate portrait of the situation.
SAFECAST FUTURE
Through these efforts, we want to raise awareness of the need for accurate radiation data -- not only in Japan, but throughout the world. That’s why we see our efforts as a long-term endeavor to measure periodically the same location and create a baseline of the planet for future generations to use. Not only radiation, we also plan to expand our platform to collect and share other environmental data such as air pollution.
SAFECASTEFFORTS
We make our radiation level measurements publicly available on the internet. Currently we have gathered more than 3,000,000 readings, making our data more and more accurate. We also contribute by conducting radiation measurements on request, conduct seminars, and develop open hardware and software. Besides Japan, we have started an effort to measure radiation across the planet.
