SaaS – A Revolution

This SaaS is not the Saas of the Saas-Bahu daily soaps (serials) which is all about scheming in the

negative sense rather this is a revolutionary scheme for businesses of all sizes. It is, in fact, quite

like ‘Saans’ (breathe in Hindi) so it can pump real oxygen into businesses when it comes to

automation.

SaaS is the popular abbreviation of “Software as a Service”. This solution is an outcome of

cloud technology and its applications. Cloud computing is the use of computing resources, both

hardware and software, that are delivered as a service over a network, usually the Internet. SaaS

is a type of public cloud computing that hosts free software. SaaS makes software and associated

data hosted on a cloud accessible to users with a thin client (computer) on a web browser.

SaaS allows data to be transferred between the client and the provider via internet and the

stored data can be accessed by the client using software provided by the service provider. Start-

up costs involved in this are much less and clients may pay only for the amount of storage space

used or as per number of transactions.

SaaS has today emerged as a common delivery model for various business models like

accounting, collaboration, customer relationship management, enterprise resource

management, content management, e-mail, games and the like and revolutionizing the

automation in businesses.

SaaS, by using cloud services have been able to reduce its costs and also provide efficient

services. Companies have therefore taken to this new idea of outsourcing hardware and

software maintenance and support to the SaaS provider. This eliminates the need to install and

run the application on the cloud user's own computers simplifying maintenance and support.

In comparison to traditional software that is conventionally sold at higher prices and with

limited licenses, SaaS providers give software services on a platform for which the user has to

pay a monthly fee for unlimited/limited usage or a fee for every transaction. It allows business

to access functionalities at lower costs than their licensed copies.

Another benefit of SaaS is its ability to accommodate different users of the application while

making it appear to each that they have the application all to themselves. Virtualization of

hardware and multi-tenancy are two of SaaS’s very strong core value propositions. SaaS based

applications allow the users to work on the system from anywhere in the world, thus reducing

geographical limitations of availability of the software, hardware or service.

SaaS is often referred to as software delivery on demand as it can be used whenever and

wherever required. Google Apps, Quickbooks Online, Microsoft Office 365 etc. are some of the

commonly used applications running on SaaS services. SaaS is expanding rapidly as many more

start-ups related to IT and ITeS emerge on the horizon and utilize these common resources to

reduce their costs and build up profit margins.

We, at Saral Technomart, provide various business applications on SaaS mode. Online

operations management (www.op2s.in ) is a cost-effective way of automating an education

institution. Complete ERP solutions for schools (www.myschool360.in ) and colleges

(www.campuserp.in ) are available on a small per-student fee basis. Therefore, the institutions

need not shell out huge capital in order to automate. Another very useful application to improve

productivity and having control over the people placed in field is called Mobile base Sales/Field

Force Management Solution (www.msfm.in ). It enables managing, reporting and tracking of

field force through mobile and web technologies with complete authentication. Cloud based

recruitment automation solution called SmartHire (www.smart-hire.in ) to automate

recruitment process which is always very data intensive.

We invite comments and case studies from our readers demonstrating the utility of cloud based

applications and solutions. If you would like to be part of this revolution, please feel free to
