The possibility of losing something of value in order to gain an opportunity or positive experience (something good!)

Read the poem on p19 of you text. As humans we need to take risks to survive. Thousands of years

ago, if we you didn’t try to hunt a mammoth, you would starve. But if you did, it might kills you!

Animals have to take risks. People who didn’t take risks died, and their genes didn’t get past

on. Today we use risk for the feeling it gives us, to learn about our

world, and to grow as a person (base jumper, not working in class, baby taking first steps.

One of the most important concepts to understand in life is that things are never perfect - there are always risks that we need to take. Working out how to manage risks is the important skill.

For each of the following pictures, give a number out of ten as to how risky you think it is.

Look at the activities you gave a high risk rating?

Are they similar or different? Did the people next to you have similar or

different ideas? Which was the most/least risky according to

the whole class? What are the dangers and benefits of the

biggest risks? Did males/females have similar answers or

different?

Real risk is the actual possibility of something going wrong.

Perceived risk is when we think or fear that something might go wrong.

Which one is better in Outdoor Ed? Think about standing at the top of a 30m cliff in an

abseiling harness. You are scared of heights. You move of the edge. How do you feel? You make your way down. You get to the bottom. How do you feel now?

Now imagine you are an experienced abseiler – 3 years worth. You stand at the top of the cliff. How do you feel.

Now imagine you are standing at the top of a kids rock climbing wall. How do you feel.

Rate the following events out of 10 for ‘danger’ and ‘benefit’.

Think about physical, emotional and social dangers, as well as fitness, health, social, emotional benefits.

Table all the results on the board, and find the average for result for each event for ‘benefit’ and ‘danger’.

Graph the results What do you notice. Write a statement explaining the relationship

between benefit and danger. Explain why risk is important but why it needs

to be limited. Why do you think 18-25 year old have the

highest amount of road accidents?

Having a level of risk is necessary to get into a state of ‘flow’ or ‘peak experience’.

As outdoor planners, guides, and leaders, it is our job to minimise, or ‘manage’ risk.

We are cannot completely remove it – that’s not the point.

It is all about maximising the perceived risk, to have the best experience, while reducing the real risk, to maintain safety.

As part of your SAC, your task will be to complete a ‘risk management’ document for your surf camp. To convince the teachers, principals and parents that it is safe to take you on the trip.
