Online Backup

Offline Backup

Online Backup

In this method backup of exchange database file are done while server is running an offline backup can be taken in following way:

Normal Backup is a process to backup Exchange store with log files.

A copy Backup is used to get full backup Exchange store without disturbing on going incremental and decremented backup.

Incremental Backup backs up only log files that has changed since the last normal and incremental backup.

Detrimental Backup backs up Exchange store that have occurred since the last normal backup.

Offline Backup

Offline Backup method backups Exchange server files and folders when Exchange services are not running or server is shutdown. ( It means the backup software backups only when the services are not running )

NTBackup is a inbuilt utility used for backing up Exchange server 2000 and 2003

Windows Server Backup inbuilt utility for windows 7 and later versions of windows operating system, is used for Exchange server 2007 and 2010

Limitation of Inbuilt Utility

NTBackup utility does not support heavy corruption.

NTBackup can not used to backup registries on remote computer.

• No scheduling capabilities of its own, outside scheduler is required

• Windows server backup tool makes VSS based backup only
