ETEC 511 Discourse Leadership Groups2009

Discourse Leadership (15%) You have been assigned to a group and a topic to coordinate a discussion forum of your peers. It will be your responsibility to clearly re/present the topic and reading(s), and to coordinate the discussions. Please use the approach indicated below. Format: Group Project— groups of 3. For the discussion that you lead, please prepare to:

1. Outline the readings (primary and secondary sources) and post this outline to the group.2. Provide a brief overview of the readings based on the outline.3. Define key terms or methodological and theoretical concepts that are challenging.4. Design handouts, discussion questions and presentation media for clarifying the readings and with

attention to inclusive participation..5. Moderate and bring closure to the topic for the week.

Guidelines for collaborative learning:

You will be assigned to a Private Group which can be used for planning your presentation. These will appear under the Private Groups category. You may also use email or other communication tools for the planning stages. The forum in which you will present appears under the category Group Discourse Leadership – Topic. This forum is public; therefore, you will want to do most of your planning in the private group or other as decided on by the group.

You may wish to assign roles to each member in the form of Moderator and Presenter/Summarizer. Plan your presentation and strategy to maintain order within your discussion forum, focusing on key concepts. These roles are optional and are being offered simply as a method of organizing the planning and presentation process.

Moderator(s): a) opens the discussion and introduces members; b) ensures the discussion remains focused; c) periodically synthesizes the contributions; stimulates and encourages participation if it begins to lag; d) seek clarification when necessary.

Presenter(s)/Summarizer(s): a) develops a brief summary of the key concepts and posts it for comments: b) invites comments from the class; c) takes an active role in the follow-up discussion; d) make connections between different points and conclude the discussion.

This collaborative assignment is worth 15% of your overall mark and the criteria for Assessment appear in the box on page 10 of your syllabus. Once you have completed your presentation, you should write a brief summary (can be the same for all three members) and post it into the Assignments Dropbox. The summary is simply a “placecard” to allow me to post a grade to that assignment.
