Radio Plays looked into

One of the first radio plays I looked into was Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare I, looked into this one as this was one of the most famous writers in history. This radio play is about the last few months of Julius Caesar’s life that led up to him getting murdered. This helped me with my play as it gave me ideas on how to word it to make sure that it seemed that Simon had done the unspeakable thing and murdered a lot of his family members.

The Next radio play drama that I looked at was ‘ECCC 2012: Star Wars Trilogy: The Radio Play’, this was a run through with the cast and sound effects. this helped me with my radio play as I wanted there to be sound effects and I found that this was one of the best plays that showed me how to mix the different amounts of sound effects together making sure that they have blended together well and don’t clash with each other. This gave me ideas on how to recreate this similarly in my own radio play. Through this it narrowed down the number of ideas that I had for the sound effects as it showed me that they shouldn’t be over powering, but should be in the background where the audience thinks of it subconsciously.

The third radio play that I looked into was on of the famous James Bond themed films in radio called ‘Gold finger’, through looking at this it helped me to conduct my radio play as many of the aspects of being a spy was considered when in the interview I decided the detective would bring up the matter of a Neighbour taking a picture of his car outside his uncles house. Even though it doesn’t go into detail on what happens exactly it leaves the audience to imagine how the neighbour had done this in the first place. This was another one that helped me with the sound effects as many of the different parts had the different sound effects that corresponded with what was going on.

Once I had decided it would definitely be a radio play drama I looked into an interrogation in another radio play. This helped me to get the idea of what needed to be in there, and what was the codes and conventions of a police interrogation. Through this I was able to build up my own police interrogating scene and this was the whole idea for the radio play where it would be set until the end of the play. This helped me to understand the codes and conventions of a radio play as a whole better. The main features that I found in an interrogation room to be are:

• There is always one or two detectives• There is always a good cop and a bad cop• There is always pauses in the middle• The person who is being interviewed always seems to be nervous.

Bio Shock was the next radio play that I looked at about a man who kills his wife and tries to cover up what he has done. This was the one that seemed to relate to my radio play the most as Simon was in a similar position when he killed of many of his family members. This means that I could take the ideas of the extreme measures this man took in this radio play to hide what he had done and relate them to my main character Simon. The two of them had similar characteristics one in particular was the charismatic appearances of them as they were likeable through their charms.

I also looked into the radio play drama of ‘The Hobbit’ to begin with as this was one of the first that had taken my interest from reading the books already. This gave me a sense of satisfaction when the voices in Simon’s head were reminding him of what he had done over the week/ months he had been killing his parents. In particular this was highlighted towards the end where there is the big battle where many of the elves, humans, and dwarves get killed. There seemed to be a thirst for this, and I wanted this thirst for killing to come across in the radio play by it being empathised about how many of his family members he actually killed.

Another one that I looked at was ‘War of the Worlds’, this helped me to produce the sound affects with my own radio play as there was a mixture and it highlighted if they are put together right then it will sound great. The radio play drama when it was first broadcasted highlighted the fact of how believable radio plays can become as many people were sent into a panic as they thought this was really happening as they were listening to it. This shows the power that one radio play can have on peoples mind.

Like this radio play I wanted to make sure that mine was memorable, and would make people want to listen to it again and again. Though I didn’t want the same effect to happen to those who listened to mine as in Wars of the Worlds.
