Page 9: R12 upgrade webinar

Before you begin R12 Upgrade

1. Is it 12.1.3 or 12.2.X?

2. Technical or Functional Upgrade

3. Customization Footprint

4. Infrastructure – Time to upgrade?

5. Project Team

Release 12.1.3 or 12.2.X

When Should You Choose 12.1?

Consider targeting 12.1 if any of the following circumstances applies to your organization:

• You prefer to target a release which Oracle has thousands of live customers. • You would like to stay on 12.1 for 3-5 years before upgrading to 12.2. • You need to move from a release below 11.5.10 with no direct upgrade to 12.2.

When Should You Choose 12.2?

Consider targeting 12.2 if any of the following circumstances applies to your organization:

Customizations

Customization Footprint

How many customizations do you have? How many can you drop because of new functionality? How many do you need to carry forward?

What customizations are going to work in R12?

R12.2 Readiness Report – for Custom code. Provides exceptions at the DB object level.R12.2 Best Coding Practices – mandatory to be followed for on-line patching.Does not provide help for the application code

What customizations need retrofitting for R12?

What’s the effort to retrofit customizations?

R12.2 - Best Coding Practices

As a part of the on-line patching, several reports are provided to ensure the best coding

practices being followed. Re-visit your existing customizations!

• All custom schema should be registered as an Application.

• Table name should not end with ‘#’.

• Table Name must be unique within the first 29 bytes.

• Base Column Name must be unique within 28 bytes.

• Column Type must not be LONG or LONG RAW. Use CLOB instead.

• Column Type should not be ROWID.

• Table must be owned by an EBS product schema, not APPS.

• Query/DML statements must access tables via the Table Synonym or the

Editioning View only.

• Index Name should not contain ‘_’ (underscore).

Infrastructure

Opportunity to upgrade infrastructure

1. What’s your current Operating System?

2. Migrate to other platform?

3. Upgrade Hardware• Release 12 is more resource intensive• Needs more disk (online patching)• Resource needs for 12.1.3 vs 12.2

# POC Method vs Upgrade Assessment

1 Real life upgrade of a clone of YOUR Production instance to identify challenges, providing you with a ‘real’ upgrade experience

Upgrade assessment are generally based on prior “experience” by the consultants involved in the project.

2 Accurate identification of development objects (RICE/CEMLI) that need retrofitting based on the actual upgrade

The list of development objects have to be provided by you which most often is gathered from your knowledge/documents from the original implementation. Tools used to gather the information, may not provide all the current objects in use.

3 Identification of required R12 functionality based on actual user experience

Standard R12 Functionality gathered from release notes released by Oracle Corporation from time to time.

4 Identification of Pros and Cons of an Upgrade vs. Re-Implementation specific to your environment

Standard information gathered from white papers usingconsultant’s ‘experience’.

5 Accurate estimates (including sizing) for the actual upgrade or re-implementation project based on actual upgrade experience of your data

Based on “assessment” carried out with out actually testing your system
