Network monitoring refers to the continuous and proactive monitoring of a computer network for slow, unresponsive, or failing components and informing about the same to the network administrator.

Real time network monitoring software uncovers details related to usage, threshold limit, pattern, and load and capacity utilization, among others, of network devices. System administrator is immediately notified about any problem or discrepancy through mail, cell phones, SMS, etc.

Before we proceed further it is important to understand computer network in detail. This will allow us to better understand network monitoring and how monitoring tools can keep mission critical applications up and running.

A computer network, also known as data network, is a telecommunication network that facilitates exchange of data between two or more computers connected through a cable or wireless media.

A telecommunication network is a collection of terminal nodes, intermediate nodes, and links that uses packet, message, or circuit switching to ensure that the signals are routed to the correct destination terminal.

Each terminal in the network has a unique address associated with it to ensure delivery of messages to the correct recipient. Prime examples of telecommunications networks are Internet, telephone network, etc.

Network devices from where the data originates, and then is routed and terminated are called network nodes. Personal computers, servers, networking hardware, etc. are all nodes. A process in a network device can exchange data and information with process in another device in which it is networked.

An intrusion detection system (IDS) is a software application whose primary purpose is to constantly monitor devices in the network for any malicious attacks, intrusions, or policy violations.

Some systems possess the additional capability of eliminating the threat apart from identifying it. This, however, may be an exception rather than the rule since the chief purpose of this system is to detect security breach and immediately notify it to the concerned authority.

A monitoring system differs slightly from the intrusion detection system software. The job of monitoring software is to prevent downtime and increase productivity by actively monitoring the networks for overloaded or crashed servers and failing and irresponsive components, as opposed to detecting malware, or viral threats.

Network monitoring service providers may have servers around the globe. It is imperative that the servers are running smoothly and there is no interruption or downtime. Quality service providers need to ensure pro-active monitoring for a smooth IT experience.

Superior quality providers have the technical knowhow and capability of effectively monitoring CPU usage, hard disk, and memory usage; Link monitoring, Network bandwidth monitoring, etc. to ensure availability of networks across various networks locations.
