1.4 billion people are heavily impacted by lack of access to electricity
●The lack of electricity
● endangers peoples’ health
● puts a strong brake on development
● increases environmental damages
●Slum inhabitants (1bn people increasing by 500,000 per week) connect to the
grid in poor conditions because of their situation
●Access to electricity is intrinsically hard, they pay more and they get a
poorer service
●Remote villages must be focused to develop the people, the agriculture and to
reduce slump growth.
Schneider Electric – Nigeria – March 2011
In 20 years’ time: 1.2bn people will still lack access to electricity,
87% of them living in rural areas
2008: 4 billion people with electricity, 1.5 billion people without
2030: 5.5 billion people with electricity, 1.2 billion people without

Focus on People Train to energy management trades
Overview
Schneider Electric – Nigeria – March 2011
Focus on People
Train to energy management trades 4 principles
Focussing on the most underprivileged populations (with reference to the country’s
average wealth)
> Being part of the letter and spirit of the BipBop project
Training in the electricity and automation professions
> Guaranteeing the credibility and added value of Schneider Electric
Partnership with a local non-profit making structure (Association, NGO, school,
university)
> Respecting local pedagogical know-how and putting it to good use. Preparing for
withdrawal over time
Commitment of the local subsidiary
> Guaranteeing the quality, suitability and viability of the project. Favouring close
monitoring. Increasing Schneider Electric’s overall contribution
Schneider Electric – Nigeria – March 2011
Focus on People
Train to energy management trades 5 training areas
Basic electricity training
> Favouring initial access to employment for young people from extremely poor backgrounds
Training technicians and senior technicians
> Providing access to employment for underprivileged young people and thus contributing to local economic development
Training automation specialists > Addressing the lack of qualified labour in the operating / maintenance of automation systems by training young people
Training in crisis situations > Ensuring the continuity of vocational training in crisis or post-crisis situations (war, disaster)
Additional training (evening classes)
> Allowing young people to acquire basic knowledge in electricity whilst continuing with their “activity”
