Introduction to Computing
Printers
Printers
• A printer is an output device thatproduces text and graphics on aphysical medium such as paper.
• Many different printers exist with varyingspeeds, capabilities, and printing methods.
• There are two types of
Printers.• Impact Printers • Non Impact Printers
Impact Printers• An impact printer forms characters and
graphics on a piece of paper by striking a mechanism against an inked ribbon that physically contacts to the paper.
These are the further types of Impact Printer.
• Dot-Matrix Printers
• Daisy-wheel Printers• Line printers
Dot-Matrix Printers
• The dot-matrix printer uses print heads containing from 9 to 24 pins. These pins produce patterns of dots on the paper to form the individual characters. The 24 pin dot-matrix printer produces more dots than a 9 pin dot-matrix printer.
Daisy-wheel Printers
• It is a type of Impact Printer invented in 1969 by David S. Lee.
• It uses a metal or plastic disk containing each of the letters, numbers, and other characters. When something is printed, the printer rotates the disk to each character and then using a hammer strike each character into an ink ribbon to create the character on paper.

Line Printer
• A high-speed Printer capable of printing an entire line at one time. A fast line printer can print as many as 3,000 lines per minute. The disadvantages of line printers are that they cannot print graphics, the print quality is low, and they are very noisy.

Non Impact Printer
• A nonimpact printer forms characters and graphics on a piece of paper without actually striking the paper. Some nonimpact printers use spray ink, while others use heat or pressure to create images.
• The further types of nonimpact printer are:
• Ink-jet printers• Photo printers• Laser printers• Thermal printers• Mobile printers
Inkjet Printer
• An ink-jet printer is a type of non-impact printer. It prints characters and graphics by spraying tiny drops of liquid ink on paper. These printers can produce quality text and graphics in both black-and-white and color including photos.
Photo Printer• It is a type of Printer that prints the photos
that taken by digital camera. Some photoprinters print just one or two sizes of images, for example, 3 * 5 inches and 4 * 6 inches. Others print up to letter size, legal size, or even larger. Many photo printers use ink-jet technology.

LASER Printer
• A type of Printer that linked to a computer that prints on a paper using LASER technology in which LASER to form a pattern of electromagnetically charged dots on a light sensitive drum.
Thermal Printer
• A printer that uses heat to transfer an impression onto paper. It uses wax and coated papers.
Mobile Printer
• A mobile printer is a small, lightweight, battery-powered printer that allows a mobile user to print from a notebook computer, Tablet PC, PDA, or smart phone while traveling.

MFP (Multifunction Peripheral Device)
• A multifunction peripheral is asingle device that looks like a copymachine but provides the functionality of a printer, scanner, copy machine, and perhaps a fax machine (Figure). Some use color ink-jet printer technology, while others include a black-and white laser printer. An advantage of these devices is they are significantly less expensive.
