How To Complete A
Pre-Search Worksheet
1st-General Encyclopedia
• Visit the
• Use the Advanced search
• Use the 2009 book set
Only fill out 1
section under the
Encyclopedia. You
do NOT need to
look in both the
print and online!
2nd-Specialized Reference• Click on Destiny Library Catalog
• Choose Jamison ES
• Begin your search using keywords– You may need to change your keywords or think of broader or
narrower topics if necessary.
• You MUST also go look in the Reference section to make sure there are not more books that would possibly pertain to your topic (it might be a small section in a book, use the Table of Contents to help!)
A call # that begins
with “Ref” indicates
that it is a specialized
reference book.
3rd-Nonfiction books
• Click on Destiny Library Catalog
• Choose Jamison ES
• Begin your search using keywords– You may need to change your keywords or think of
broader or narrower topics if necessary.
Choose nonfiction
books that will be
appropriate for your
reading level.
4th-Online Databases
• Click on Click on
• Choose SIRS Discoverer
• Search using a relevant keyword
– Choose an article carefully!
• Does the information match what you are looking
for?
• If the information needs to be recent, check that
the date is recent.There are also lots of great pictures on
this database for your presentation!
5th-Websites
• Visit a search engine
• Complete a keyword search
• Choose a website carefully– What to look for in a reliable website
• Is there an author that has expertise on the topic?
• Is there a company or organization that published the website?
• Is the website up-to-date (look for the copyright)?
• Does it give facts or someone’s opinion?
• Does it appear to have information that matches your topic?
• Does it look professional?If you can’t answer most of these
questions accurately, then you
should find another website.
