The period of third generation was 1964-1975. Characterized by the transition from transistors to the INTEGRATED CIRCUIT CHIPS and from punch card to ELECTRONIC COMPUTER SYSTEM.
Smaller in size then 1st and 2nd generations. Increased storage capabilities. Multi-programming and volatile. Speedy than 1st and 2nd generations. Keyboards and monitors were used for the
first time. Time sharing. High level languages used Generate less heat AC still needed
1964__1965: IBM360 by IBM Inc was introduced.
1965: PDP-8 was introduced. It was the 1st
computer which successfully made use of IC chips which were much cheaper and smaller. It only has
4096 words of memory.
1966: HP-2115 with this invention HEWLETT PACKARD entered in the computer business.
1969:UNIX introduced multi-user operating system which was able to
perform multi tasks.
1970:GUI(pronounced as GOOEY) designed by XEROX corporation. POINT
and CLICK, and IMAGE icons idea was introduced.
