Main objectives

Within 5 months: - to gain insights about which kind of participation we might expect and leverage on (both online and offline) - to gain insights in order to give a direction for the development of the technical platform

Our Guidelines1. Simple, feasible case studies    1.1. Requiring almost no resources from us (high probability of failure - adopt ongoing projects already carried out by others and give a direction to them 1.2. Need to have impact on territory! --> to be easy to build on (quick mashup of user-generated data) 2. Active users' participation 3. To promote collective discussion, not only data upload 4. To advantage already active communities (building a new community can be resource demanding and increase the probability of failure)  3

One of the previous case studies - and lessons learnedLa Memoria al Tempo di Internet - 22nd of October We tried to involve students in: • discussion on "what is a memory?“

• sharing of personal memories

• collectively build the memory of the event• during the day: through a couple of diaries where students could write their comments and an online blog• by uploading photos on flickr with the tag "livememories"

but... no participation! (this is good, we are needed! ;) 4

Possible case studiesAlready suggested: - Family Reunion by Ilya- Building a ‘memory’ for a particular location by Massimo Poesio - Sport Showcase by Massimo Poesio: creating a collective memory about sport (a team, an event, a type of sport )

We are investigating: 1. Opera for the future (portobeseno & cooperativa mercurio)2. TrentoAsa community (archivio Ferrandi - Museo Storico) 3. OpenStreetMap by school students4. Family Tree (Archivio Diocesano)5. Trentino bloggers 6. MIT and Zambana Vecchia

1. Opera for the future Opera Universitaria and Portobeseno already started a collective construction of the memory of the birth of the new students residence San Bartolomeo through:- photos- videos- audio interviewsWe could continue with the collaboration of Portobeseno and of the Cooperativa Mercurio (they have a web radio we could leverage on within the residence)pro: active, young, “connected” users, “social networks”, easy mashup, tied to real-world locations and contactscons: tools: webradio platform, upload of files on Flickr, ...content: photos, audio and video files, textstarget: university studentsresources: low resources demandingprobability of success: 20%

2. TrentoAsa communityTrentoAsa is an active community of photographs on Flickr (trentoasa.it, www.flickr.com/groups/trento_asa 127 members) We could exploit some material from the Historical Museum of Trento (possibility to use the museum's archive of photos given by citizens) We could set a photo contest about the memory of particular places (how they were and how they are) and engage/monitor the discussion within the communitypro: already online, motivated, tech-savvy, easy mashupcons: engagement must be very cooltools: Flickr content: photos, maybe some textstarget: Flickr usersresources: low resources demandingprobability of success: 12% 7

3. OpenStreetMapSchool Students go OpenStreetMapping (representing/collecting memories of the places) Cristina Moretto works in FBK on this!  We could involve the participation of student's parents or grandparents, ie. Recording and creating connections between different memories (how different people felt or feel particular places, roads, parks, ecc.). Pro: could meet teachers' interests; possibility to involve students, parents and grandparents, both online and offlineCons: we're tied to a particular instrument? (openstreetmap); how can it be mashupped?tools: openstreetmap, tools for text comments and photo uploadcontent: trails on maps, geolocated photos and text memoriesTarget: children/boys&girls; their parents/grandparentsresources: low resources demandingprobability of success: 8+/-10%

4. Family TreeThe Archivio Diocesano has a big database containing names of people who left the Trentino region in the XIX century. On the 22nd of October they said they wanted to put online this archive anyway, to help people who asked to find their forefathers. How to exploit this archive to engage a discussion on it? How could we involve citizens somehow? pro: data should be online anyway (to be verified)cons: privacy issues, will data be online?tools: content: name and what?target: every citizen (especially people with expats)probability of success: ??% 9

5. Trentino blogger 245 blogs at http://www.blogitalia.it/elenco_dei_blog.asp?pv=92 but many moresome aggregated at http://www.trentowiki.it/blogs/they're already contributing live memories (their blogs!!!)  Pro: already contributing "memories", tech-savvy, easy to mashup (RSS), want to be engaged in online discussionsCons: it might require a lot of time to follow and inspire and monitor ongoing conversations, what is the "right" engagement bit?tools: just their blogscontent: mainly text! target: trentino bloggersprobability of success: 34%

6. MIT and Zambana Vecchia

http://mobile.mit.edu/en/zambanaMIT and FBK joint project To investigate how to transform the village of Zambana into a Sustainable Green Village (creatively redesign the village of Zambana, from an urban planning perspective, as well as from architectural and new media design perspectives).  Collect the memory of what Zambana was (landslide) and what is becoming ... Pro: MIT does it anyway, physical worldCons: not straightforwardtools: voice interviews and photos?content: text, photos, voice, video?target: inhabitants of Zambana (past, present, future)probability of success: ~4%
