What is photosynthesis?

Plants are producers. This

means they make their own food.

Plants make their own food in a process called

photosynthesis.Plants make their own food through photosynthesis. This food

(glucose) is often converted into other forms, such as starch and cellulose in order to repair and build more cells- thus making the

plant grow.

3There are THREE

ingredients needed for

photosynthesis to occur. Do you know what they

are?

Carbon DioxidePlants breathe just like us! There are tiny openings, called stomata, on the bottom of their leaves that help carbon dioxide and oxygen to enter and exit the plant, kind of like our nose.

Plants breathe in the carbon dioxide and breathe out the oxygen.

Humans do the opposite. We breathe in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide.

WaterPlants also drink!

This is why you need to water plants or they will die. They use their roots to suck

water up into their bodies.

Sunlight

The sun provides the

energy needed for

photosynthesis to happen.

Page 10: Photosynthesis powerpoint 1

Leaves are made up of a bunch of tiny cells. Chlorophyll is the material that gives plants their green color. With the help of chlorophyll, plants

take in energy from the sun and use it to produce sugar.

thus making the plant grow.

The sugar is then used by the plants for food, and the oxygen is breathed out into the atmosphere. This process as a whole is

"photosynthesis."
