But recently, with the emergence of new 3D data acquisition technologies, analysis algorithms and applications, 3D becomes more and more accessible to government and business use cases. As the 3D playing field is vast, this overview does not pretend to be exhaustive. It presents some of the current 3D GIS capabilities related to 3D data acquistion, 3D analysis, 3D measuring, 3D modeling and 3D visualization) with visual examples. Additionally it shows common 3D use cases in urban, rural, subsurface environments, and (serious) games. The 3D workflow starts with capture of 3D raw data, then this data is processed and enhanced to create 3D vector objects or 3D raster datasets with a certain Level of Detail (LoD). These 3D objects and datasets can then be used for 3D measurements, analysis and modeling. The 3D data can be visualized in 3D viewers, and in virtual- and augmented environments.
