Executive Summary RESEARCH BACKGROUND Osterman Research conducted a survey with email users and those knowledgeable about their organizations’ IT infrastructure in March 2010. The goal was to determine • The number of emails sent and received per day. • The proportion of emails that contained attachments of various sizes. • The penetration of social networking, instant messaging and mobile platforms. • The penetration of hosted email offerings. • Current and planned use of Microsoft SharePoint, Lotus Quickr and Google Apps. DETAILS OF THE SURVEY • A total of 235 surveys were completed with individuals from the Osterman Research

survey panel.

• The mean number of employees at the organizations surveyed was 11,179; the mean number of email users was 10,216. The medians were 300 and 308, respectively.

• Data was segmented into organizations of up to 500 employees (125 surveys) and

larger organizations (110 surveys). • The majority of the surveys were conducted with respondents in North America. • Osterman Research funded this study internally.
