Crash Analysis

Community Building

Step One: Gather Some Cooks

German Open-Source-Treffen founded by Mozilla and OpenOffice.org in July 2009

open source is widely adopted
millions of users worldwide (with no clue about projects)
thousands of active projects (with similar challenges)
lots of possible new volunteers

bringing together regular users and projects

creating awareness for free software
and fostering open standards
on a local & regional basis

Step Two: Find a Kitchen

Caf Netzwerk in Munich, a youth caf facility with a small bar and little snacksalternatives were (expensive) bars, schools, nonprofits

room for up to 70 people

convenient to reach by public transportation,
near the central station

no obligation to eat and drink

has video projector, wi-fi and engaged staff :-)

Step Three: Invite Some Guests

five evening events with an average of 40 people, now taking place monthlyevery fourth Friday for free software

2-4 talks per evening, max. 20 minutes/eachOpenStreetMap, CAcert, x2go, LiMux (City of Munich)

and, of course, Mozilla and OpenOffice.org

special guestsDan Mosedale, Mitchell Baker, Florian Schiel

soon to come: Chris Hofmann and Kev Needham

Step Four: Make Some Noise

set up a dedicated website and mailing lists www.opensourcetreffen.de

did lots of Web 2.0-stuffIRC

bots at Twitter and identi.ca

groups at Facebook and XING

spread the word in blogs, forums and to press

regularly give talks about the topic ;-)

Step Five: Add Salt to the Soup

first Open-Source-Treffen in Leipzig in fall 2009

dedicated workshop days for 2010 plannedOpenStreetMap day in Munich

Bughunting sessions for OpenOffice.org and Firefox

thinking of video archives,
probably live stream for larger events

Everybody loooooves pictures!

Some more pictures...

Say cheese!

Pictures, pictures, pictures...

That's it...

Thanks for joining!
