ERC OA Guidelines
December 2006 - ERC Scientific Council's Statement on Open Access:
– fundamental importance of peer-review in ensuring the certification and dissemination of high-quality scientific research
– the importance of wide access and efficient dissemination of research results.
December 2007 – ERC Guidelines for Open Access:
– The ERC requires that all peer-reviewed publications from ERC-funded research projects be deposited on publication into an appropriate research repository where available or an institutional repository, and subsequently made Open Access within 6 months of publication.
– The ERC considers essential that primary data are deposited to the relevant databases as soon as possible, preferably immediately after publication and in any case not later than 6 months after the date of publication.

European Helpdesk
Promote FP7-pilot and ERC OA guidelinesNational Open Access Desks (27 countries)Provide OA “toolkits” for
– Researchers– Institutions– Repository managers
Setup 24/7 portal for deposit, search of OA publicationsLiaise with
– Other European OA initiatives– Publishers– CRIS systems
10
OpenAIRE Infrastructure Basics
Builds on European OA Repository infrastructure (DRIVER, D-NET)Researchers deposit once
– Harvest from OpenAIRE compliant repositories– OpenAIRE provides “Orphan” repository
Access to scientific publications– Search, browse– Visualization tools
Provide monitoring tools for– Document/depositing statistics– Usage statistics from repository infrastructure
Interoperation with other infrastructures 11
In practice
What Researchers should do
13
How to comply?
What OpenAIRE will do
How to make your life (to comply) easier?
Provide support & information on:– OA policies of EC & compliance– Depositing– Intellectual Property Rights– Open Access
Make European repository infrastructure ready

17
Copyright Issues
Author (prior to publication):– Use the „Addendum to Publication
Agreement“ as provided by the EC Library (after publication):– Repository manager / librarian checks
copyright issues– Majority of publishers allow deposit of
author‘s manuscript in OA repositories
18
OA Publishing Costs
100% refund:
For other activities not covered by paragraphs 1 and 2, inter alia, management activities, training, coordination, networking and dissemination (including publications), the contribution may reach a maximum of 100% of the total eligible costs.
(FP7 Grant Agreement, Annex II General Conditions, Article 16.4 )
Help to Identify FP7 publications
Acknowledge project in publication
Use publication identifier at reporting time
Urge institutional repository to become
OpenAIRE compliant
