Introduction : Twist is the spiral arrangement of the fibers around the axis of the yarn. The twist binds the fibers together and also contributes to the strength of the yarn. The amount of twist inserted in a yarn defines the appearance and the strength of the yarn. The number of twists is referred to as turns per inch.

Types of Twist:

S -Twist Z –Twist

Objectives: Contribute to the strength of the yarn. To calculate the number of twists in an inch of yarn. The amount of twist in a yarn helps to define the style of yarn. To find the quality of fibers used. To measure the fitness of the fiber being spun.

Working Principle : (Principle of Untwist and Re-twist)

At least 15inches of yarn from yarn package should be left out from the free end.

Yarn Size=10” is clamped at screw . Rotate the handle manually, which is turn rotate the revolution counter. When the fiber is fully untwisted, the counter light will be off automatically. The measurement of revolution in the revolution meter result should be

noted.

Calculation:Twist of yarn (10”) =110

Twist per inch yarn=11010 =11

Result:By Calculating via yarn twist tester machine, the measurement of twist per inchIs=11/inch yarn.

Conclusion:As per above discussion, we can say that measurement of twist per inch used to determine the strength of yarn, define the direction of yarn, fitness of fiber being spun and thickness or coarseness of yarn.
