My emphasis – What we heard from funders

• Just completed 6 month survey - 41 funders, 13 TSPs

• “Amplifying Social Impact in a Connected Age: A Survey

of Tech-Related Grantmaking for Social Benefit”

• How and why funders are – and are not – supporting

NPO’s in using tech for social change/programmatic work

• Exec Sum: http://zerodivide.org/funder_report

or http://bit.ly/e0qgFo (that’s zero, small oh)

But first, short version of suggestions:

An article from Philanthropy.com for your funders:

“How a Small Nonprofit Made Simple Tech Tweaks

and Saved $176,000”

By William Grassie - http://bit.ly/eZMFp3

Focus on ops efficiencies, does address key barriers:

competing funding priorities, measurement.

Not shocking, helpful making the case. Other findings?

Survey goals and objectives

• Goal: Info to help increase quality, quantity of tech-related grantmaking for programmatic impact

• Identify barriers to funding, rec’s for overcoming

• ZD emphasis: underserved communities’ tech use

• Tech for social impact, program goals: campaigns, advocacy, service delivery, engagement – not ops

• Newer tools: video, mobile/sms, social media, etc.

• “Tech integration” or “transform v. transact”

Page 15: NTCFoundTech Power Point

15

Report Findings – selected list for this session

• High funder interest, limited familiarity or expertise

• Existing investments modest: mostly back end

• Type of investments tactical, not strategic

• The digital (funding) divide – who’s being funded

• Strategies for impactful investment unclear – skeptical

of ROI, better measurement needed

• Good news: Future $, Grantees leading the charge

16

Rec’s + Comments

From funders:

• Increase funder education and advising activities

• Expand the pool of investment

• Strengthen TSP infrastructure

My thoughts from findings:

• Don’t be shy about ask – they’re curious, skg guidance

• Data: modest experiment, show #’s & commitment

• Propose TA/trainings across a cohort of their grantees
