Use Case – Agriculture Monitoring #CS20001114 Nov, 2015
Introduction The objective of this primer is to provide the reader with an understanding of how a chemical giant recommended Nimble's temperature monitoring solution for their clients to improve agricultural produce and minimize cost..
Agriculture Monitoring – The Problem Few vineyards in the North Coast of California were affected by a severe advective spring frost. The spring frost affected the vineyard during the bud break when the vines send out tender young shoots that will produce this fall's grape crop. Frost damaged the shoots, causing them to look like they've been burned with a torch. Once the shoots are damaged, grape production is severely reduced or wiped out completely. More than 30% of the vineyards were affected by the frost. The frost occurs during autumn (early frost) or spring (late frost). Frosts are predicted by the met department and provide caution to the farmers. The farmers take necessary action such as water sprinkling or fogging. But advective frosts such as this are unpredictable.
Considering the total value of the wine grapes from these vineyards is worth $ 40 million, the loss amounts close to $ 10 million. The farmers also had to incur high costs for the fuel of oil burners, which he used in the failed attempt to protect their vineyards from the frost.
Swearing never to lose their harvest to frost, the farmers approached a large chemical company for a consultation.

The Solution The chemical giant discussed with Nimble Wireless to provide the solution. Nimble's early warning frost detection system helped prevent damage to crops by providing an early warning alarm of impending frost conditions. Instead of the requirement to wake up every few hours to check the outside temperature, Nimble's early warning system activated an SMS or email alert when the temperature in the field fell below a programmed set-point.
Nimble's solution consists of a rugged and reliable remote sensor unit that was installed at locations where the temperature requires monitoring. The device is IP67 compliant, making it dust and water proof. The battery-powered remote unit can be located up to several km away from the house. The remote temperature monitoring unit sent regular temperature update information through the cellular network to the IRIS cloud application.
The trip/alert temperature was set slightly above frost point (2 or 3 degrees Celsius) in order to give plenty of warning before a frost condition occurs. In event, an SMS/email/voice call is sent immediately to the farmer so that necessary action such as a watering or fog system was used to help prevent damage by the impending frost conditions.

Nimble’s Temperature Monitoring Solution Nimble provides both hardware and software needed for reliable temperature monitoring thus providing a complete end-to-end solution. Unlike other products and temperature data loggers, Nimble’s devices are truly wireless devices that can run on both battery and power, the devices use Zigbee and cellular network to communicate the temperature data. With the built-in battery, the devices send temperature data even during a power outage, which is the at most needed time to monitor temperature.
