May, 15, 1967• Born and raised in New

York• American Painter• Mostly known for his oil

work but also used watercolors and etchings

• Painted his first signed oil piece at the age of 13

• Early 1920’s Hopper struggled

• Career exploded after getting married to Josephine Nivison

• Became a very prominent American figure

• Painted in 1942 • 30 x 60 painting• Oil on canvas• Currently in the Art Institutes of Chicago

• Painted immediately after Pearl Harbor• People in painting appear gloomy reflecting the mood of

America at the time• Gloom was a common theme for Hopper
