has the possibility of changing the world.”

I am Filippo Brunelleschi, one of the greatest

men in the Renaissance. Nobody can refute

this, for I have completed one of the most

difficult challenges in the world and in my

career. This challenge would be the dome of

the Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore (the ca-

thedral of Florence. This is the crown jewel

of my achievements, which also includes the

creation of linear perspective and the intro-

duction of classical architecture to the Ren-

aissance.

To fully explain the dome I have created, I must

tell you of my past. I was born in 1337 and when

I was young, I was originally apprenticed to a

goldsmith, and eventually became a credited

goldsmith myself. Soon after this, I spent ten

years in Rome to study the architecture there.

This is truly when I began to appreciate classical

architecture and when I became architect of later

buildings, I built these buildings in the classical

style. This includes the dome of the Basilica di

Santa Maria del Fiore as well as San Lorenzo and

the Pazzi Chapel.

The dome itself had been very difficult to

build. I had to create a completely new method

to build it, but luckily for me, by looking into

the past (the Pantheon) I managed to get some

helpful hints. Personally though, I had been

under enormous amounts of pressure because

if I had failed, my reputation would be ruined

and I had to sacrifice sixteen years of my life

on this single project. However in the end, I

succeeded in building this behemoth piece of

architecture and its shadow covers all of Flor-

ence.

I believe that the dome of Florence has influ-

enced people, beyond architecture. Many peo-

ple said it was impossible to build a dome that

size and magnitude. But I didn’t and I suc-

ceeded. I looked into the past to help me. I be-

lieve that this “impossible” feat, has shown

others that what is impossible to one, is possi-

ble to another and that we can learn from the

past.
