If your teenage son is shy, it can be partly because of his genetics, behaviors he has learned, the way people have reacted to his shyness, and life experiences he’s had.

Genetics. Genes determine our physical traits, such as height, eye color, skin color, and body type. But genes also influence certain personality traits, such as shyness. But not everyone with a gene to be shy develops a shy character. Life experiences also play a role.

Life experiences. How your teenage son deals with a situation can shape his future reactions to similar life experiences. Approaching new things little by little, can help your son become more confident and comfortable. But, if he is pushed into situations he’s not willing to do, or if he is teased or bullied, it can make him more shy and uncomfortable.
