CLIMATE SERVICES

CHALLENGES, CONCERN AND NEED

• Forecaster:– Simple, Not Complicated– Computer = Forecaster itself– Non forecaster can produce climate prediction– Forecaster comes and go Prediction Skill must be

ConsistentConsistent

• User:– Climate Prediction and Information: Fast, Accurate,

Accessible and Easy to Understand No Problem with Method Used

– Longer : Better

• Skill improvement of climate prediction• Collaboration with another country that has similar

climate characteristic (i.e. MOMSEI)

o Climate information services nearly always based on land-observations analysisonly, while sea-observation (maritime) was still scarce.

o Sea Observation merely based on satellite with very rare ground observation datafor validation

o Marine data are scattered among differrent institutions in Indonesiao We do data acquisition only, but no systematic data analysis and utilizationo Oceanographic and disaster mitigation researches run independently among

working units at Indonesia National Agencieso There is no strong collaboration among government institutes to utilize the data

But….

Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) with Marine Information Providers and User at national level, resulting in the followings :

(1) Commitment to establish nationalworking group (Observation,Modeling, Product Information,Dissemination and CapacityBuilding) as a first step toward the

MARINE INTEGRATED DATA and INFORMATION SYSTEM (MIDAS)

Building) as a first step toward theestablishment of Indonesianintegrated ocean informationsystem

(2) An agreement to establish MarineIntegrated DAta and informationSystem (MIDAS) as national portalof ocean climate data andinformation
