A Smartphone is a mobile phone built on a mobile operating system, with more advanced computing capability and connectivity .

The first smartphones combined the functions of a personal digital assistant (PDA) with a mobile phone. Later models added the functionality of portable media players, low-end compact digital cameras, pocket video cameras, and GPS navigation units to form one multi-use device.

Many modern smartphones also include high-resolution touchscreens and web browsers that display standard web pages as well as mobile-optimized sites.

Design and capabilities of a Mobile OS (Operating System) is very different than a general purpose OS running on desktop machines: mobile devices have constraints and restrictions

on their physical characteristic such as screen size, memory, processing power and etc.

Scarce availability of battery powerLimited amount of computing and

communication capabilities Thus, they need different types of operating

systems depending on the capabilities they support. e.g. a PDA OS is different from a Smartphone OS.

iOS (known as iPhone OS prior to June 2010) is Apple's mobile operating system.

Apple is company who developed iPhone Operating System (iOS).

This OS is released on June 29, 2007. This OS is also used in iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. The latest mobile of Apple is iOS 4.3 Golden Master.

In this mobile phone iOS 4.3 operating System is used.

BlackBerry OS is a proprietary mobile operating system, developed by Research In Motion for its BlackBerry line of Smartphone handheld devices.

The operating system provides multitasking and supports specialized input devices that have been adopted by RIM for use in its handhelds, particularly the track wheel, trackball, and most recently, the trackpad and touch screen.

Windows Mobile is a mobile operating system developed by Microsoft that was used in smart phones and mobile devices, but is being currently phased out to specialized markets.

It is superseded by Windows Phone 7.

The current and last version is "Windows Mobile 6.5". It is based on the Windows CE 5.2 kernel.

•Market share

oInternational Data Corporation predicted that Android gets high market share at the expense of other platforms in year 2012, but also predicts that from year 2013 to 2016, iOS and Android will stop gaining market share, while Windows Phone will rise to third place behind iOS.

According to a Readers' Choice Awards survey conducted by P C Magazine in 2012, iOS and Windows Phone customers gave their phones a rating of 8.7 on a 0 (extremely dissatisfied) to 10 (extremely satisfied) scale, an improvement of 0.3 and 0.6 points respectively. Android received a 7.9 (the same rating it received in 2011), followed by webOS (7.7), Symbian (7.4) and Blackberry OS (6.8).

The biggest reasons given by readers when asked why they chose their mobile phones are as follow: operating system (51%) and 4G capability (51%) for Android, quality of email experience (46%) for Blackberry, availability of apps (63%) for iOS and operating system (78%) for Windows Phone.

The rate of lawsuits, trade complaints, and countersuits and complaints based on patents and designs, in the markets for smartphones and devices based on Smartphone OSes such as Android and iOS, increased greatly in 2010 as companies engaged in patent wars.

Smartphone war between Samsung and Apple started when Apple claimed that the original Galaxy S Android phone copied its iOS in terms of interface and possibly the hardware of iPhone 3GS.

As smartphone adoption increases, these devices become more appealing to attackers who try to infect them with malicious software(malware).[Smartphone security literature suggests that smartphone malware can be written even by average developers.

Smartphone malware is more easily distributed through application stores that have minimal or no security mechanisms, such as app kill switch, review process for their content, etc

Often malware is hidden in pirated versions of legitimate apps, which are then distributed through 3rd party app stores

•Malicious software attacks

The best way to reduce a device's vulnerability to malware attacks is to install the most recent versions of operating systems which include security patches.

The only mobile platform other than Apple's iOS without reports of malware so far is HP's (formerly Palm's) webOS, but this may be explained by its relatively low adoption rate.
