MK4D – Open API Project
Open API
Why are we interested in content sharing?
Why are we doing it?
Why are we here?
How are we doing it?
Why are we interested in content sharing?
Sharing information and knowledge is a good thing
Contextualisation of knowledge and information
Co-construction of knowledge
Advocacy - we need to walk the walk
Why are we building an Open API?
to allow other people/organisations to utilise our data
to allow others to contextualise our data within their own services and contexts
to allow cross-platform interaction, e.g. mobile platforms, off-line applications
Why are we here?
Developing for developers – not something we’ve done before
Want to ensure our API is useful to organisations in our field
Listen to experience of those who have already developed Open APIs
Look for ways we might work together on this project
APIs are no fun when there is no-one to play with!
How are we building our Open API?
Scoping phase – defining and informing our plans, specifications, approaches to the project
Specification and development – working with key partners to finalise spec. Open API built by IDS KSS/Partner Organisations/commercial dev company.
Rollout and Promotion – Release of v1 of API. Implementing with partners. Funding development of OS CMS Plugins/widgets to our API. Competitive funding awards for most competitive use of API
How are we building our Open API?
How... continued
Support and Maintenance – supporting external developers to utilise our Open API
Review and Redevelopment – review a year after release with view to improvements
Advocacy – advocacy for Open APIs and Open Data and standards
Monitoring and Evaluation – M&E of project, capturing and communicating learning
Where are we looking for help?
Functional/technical requirements gathering
Providing feedback on the specification
Helping us test
Develop applications to consume our API
Promotion of the API – promoting to other organisations? Arranging hack-days?
Are there any areas where you think we should look for partner involvement?
