HDInsight Overview

• Makes Apache Hadoop available as a service in the cloud

• MapReduce is available in Azure

• Provides a software framework for managing, analyzing, and reporting on big data

• Uses Azure Blob storage as the default file system

• Uses PowerShell to configure, run, and post-process Hadoop jobs

• Connectors can be used to import data from Azure SQL database to HDFS

The Hadoop Ecosystem on HDInsight

• Can use Hive or Pig to integrate data processing

• Integrates with Microsoft’s BI tools

• Can download Apache-compatible technologies to run on top of Hadoop clusters

• Pig is a high-level platform for processing big data

• Hive is a distributed data warehouse managing data stored in HDFS

• Sqoop transfers bulk data between Hadoop and relational databases

HDInsight Emulator

• Provides a local development environment for Azure HDInsight

• HDInsight Emulator requires 64-bit versions of the following operating systems:

• Windows 7 SP1

• Windows 2008 R2 SP1

• Windows 8

Azure Backup Overview

• Simply way to back up your data to the cloud

• Backups are encrypted before they are sent to Azure and store encrypted

• Managed using Windows Server, Windows Server Essentials, or System Center Data Protection Manager

• Must create a backup vault and upload a certificate

• Backup agent must be installed on the Windows Server you are going to back up

Schedule Backups

• You need to register the server you want to backup

• Backups can be scheduled using Azure Backup snap-in or PowerShell

• Backups can be run now in addition to scheduled

Recover Files and Folders Using Azure Backup Agent

• Data can be recovered to any server running Server 2008 R2 SP1 or newer

• Same prerequisites apply when recovering files

• You can use Azure Backup snap-in or PowerShell to recover files and folders

Managing Azure Backup

• Alerts tab can notify you if there is an update or an event message

• The Jobs tab will display the status of backup jobs

• Each server has its own set of properties that can be configured

• Each server has its own backup schedule

• Azure backup uses the server name as part of the unique identifier for the backup
