theme and context

¢ basic themesl knowledge, learning, methodologies

¢ contextl the emerging phenomena in our educational

world• connectivism• competencies acquisition via informal learning• Personal Knowledge Management (PKM)• social networking practices• lifelong learning (LLL)

our objective

¢ provide a Reference Model to supporteducators in the task of designing online learning experiences:

l aimed at skill acquisitionl involving personal knowledgel situated in a social networking contextl with full use of all the available web tools

our starting point

¢ a set of strong, converging and remarkably popular concepts and memesl connectivism

• by G. Siemens, 2004, a theoretical frameworkfor e-learning

l Lifelong Learning• a continuous beat coming from the EU zone

l web 2.0• and further

l empowerment though“individual” knowledge

¢ our in vivo educators’ experiencel teaching Instructional Designl Ph.D. theses management

connectivism means …

lifelong learning means…

¢ «… the true competence for a lifelong learner of the Knowledge Society is the capability to “stay connected” and “belong” to digital communities where interests are and can be continuously shared. »

and we all experience this…

about PKM: why

¢ knowledge is a key asset in our society, hence it should be a strong personalconcern

¢ personal knowledge, through interaction and sharing across members of a community, is the basis of an individual’s effectiveness

¢ need to re-assess the concepts of knowledge worker/knowledge learner/knowledge citizenl affected by a storm of new technologiesl violently stressed by information gigantism

PKM: what

¢ born in the university environmentl 1999: UCLA Anderson School of Managementl 2000-2002: Millikin University (prof. Dorsey)

• «Personal knowledge management is best viewed as based on a set of problem solving skills that have both a logical or conceptual as well as physical or hands-on component. »(Dorsey)

¢ a great opportunityl many tools with a lot of creativityl an unprecedented chance to fascinate our

students and “buy them in”¢ Today

l a wider scope than just academiesl also:“enterprise” PKM

question

¢ can we frame a working model supporting lifelong-learning objectivesand skill acquisition within the scope of connectivism and against the web 2.0 background?

conclusion

¢ a Reference Model has been proposed to be used in the instructional design and in the implementation of learning activities

¢ the Model is complemented and illustrated by a sample scenario showing how PKM skills can be acquired

¢ we argue that the stages and the processes contained in the Model can become a mental habit of the lifelong learner when accessing resources and building relations during formal/informal e-learning experiences

Page 32: Methods and Tools for Developing Personal Knowledge Management Skills in the Connectivist Era

32 Eden Conference, Naples, 16th June 2007

future outlook

¢ demonstrate that application of our Model will drive the learner to dynamically build an effective “personal learning environment” in which technological tools are functional to the construction of knowledge in a negotiable and adaptable space

Q & A …

¢ our questions…

l Technology. Do you believe that current (web) technology is adequately supporting personal knowledge management?

l Society. Is it true that people in need of instruction may find a response outside the Institution walls much more than within?

¢ and your ☺ questions please …
