MegaRAC PM-Lite is a highly compressed IPMI 2.0 firmware designed to be used with the

Renesas H8 2168 microcontroller. The firmware does not require any additional SRAM outside of

the standard H8 logic, using only the internal 40KB of internal SRAM and a 16KB serial EPROM.

The Intelligent Platform Interface, or IPMI, is a widely adopted industry standard that

defines a hardware-software subsystem performing platform monitoring and management

independently from the main processor. Management tasks are executed by a specialized

micro-controller, or Baseboard Management Controller

(BMC), that operates on standby power - independent

of the system’s main power - to periodically poll system

health variables such as temperature, fans, voltage, power

supplies and chassis intrusion. When discovering any

anomaly, the BMC can log the event, send alerts via LAN

and initiate recovery actions such as system reset.

MegaRAC PM-Lite side-band communication capability

enables messaging through the system NIC via LAN.

Side-band management combines the low-cost design

of an in-band management scenario with basic out-of-

band manageability, ideal for entry and mid-range blades and servers. It is also a space

efficient solution that does require an extra NIC for management purposes. Side-band based

management simplifies deployment complexity providing manageability through the same

NIC port (easy cabling) and the same IP address (easy discovery and server association).

MegaRAC PM-Lite 2.0 features include Serial over LAN capability, RMCP+ enhanced

authentication, encryption and firmware firewall.

Along with the firmware solution, AMI can provide the following utilities: > Platform Manager Configuration Program (PMCP) for graphical firmware porting and sensor configuration. This graphical porting toolkit simplifies all aspects of development with a “drag-n-drop” GUI interface to configure BMC I2C buses and sensor layout. > Platform Development Kit (PDK) for enabling OEMs to add their own functionality and customizations.

AMI’s reference design is extensible, expandable, portable, dependable and easy to deploy.

Reference design schematics are available to OEMs to simplify the design process.
