Mapping Multan
M
and beyond withhttp://www.openstreetmap.org
The 5 steps to mapping
• Collect data
• Upload data
• Create/Edit data
• Label/Tag data & add details
• Render & use map
Data is anything required to make a map: street paths, street names, photos, older maps etc.
1. Collect data
• GPS tracker and data logger
More information on the Sparkfun GeoChron GPS logger from: http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/product_info.php?products_id=8301
1. Collect data
• GPS tracker and data logger
• Aerial photos with proper GPS tags
More info. on this hobby project: http://www.mikrokopter.de/ucwiki/en/MikroKopter
2. Upload data
• Create a free account on www.openstreetmap.org (OSM)
2. Upload data
• Create a free account on www.openstreetmap.org (OSM)
• Convert GPS data from logger to gpx format (use the free gpsbabel app. for Win/Mac/Linux) The GeoChron GPS logs
are in the NMEA 0183 format, which gpsbabel can convert to gpx. Download the gpsbabel app. from: http://www.gpsbabel.org
2. Upload data
• Create a free account on www.openstreetmap.org (OSM)
• Convert GPS data from logger to gpx format (use the free gpsbabel app. for Win/Mac/Linux)
• Upload gpx files to OSM with proper tags e.g. “Multan Pakistan” and permissions e.g. “Public”
3. Create/Edit data• Use your GPS tracks or imagery as a
guide in OSM
• Create a node for a location or a point
• Create a path by joining many nodes
• Create an area or region by making a closed path More information on
using the online OSM map editor called Potlatch is here: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/Potlatch
4. Label data & add details
• A node may be a town name or the location of a traffic light
• A path may be marked as a road with a direction or a river with a name etc.
• An enclosed region or area may be a park or a hospital building More information about
which tags to use are on the OSM wiki pages.
5. Render & use map
• The OSM map automatically gets updated every 1 week (so wait for your changes)
• Export a map image for your own use
• Put the map in your website
• Use the data to create something new
The problem :-(
• Map data is just not available
• Mapping data is not free
• Available data is full of mistakes which cannot be corrected
• Data is very car-centric
• Data cannot be reused or printed
• Environment changes too fast
Open source solution :-)• Wikipedia style collaboration to create
• Free and open content
• By users mapping around where they live or travel
• Or by users that promote it to others
• Or by users that convince businesses and governments to donate data or resources
Possibilities & Applications
• Navigation & geocoding street addresses
• Urban planning & redevelopment
• Political participation
• Agriculture
• Ecology and biodiversity survey
• Riverbank erosion and its effects
...and more!
• Response to disasters and emergencies
• Tracking vehicles, safety and crime
• Data for rural development
• Rainfall, pollution and land-use monitoring
• TourismMore information on OSM approach to disaster response http://www.slideshare.net/mikel_maron/openstreetmap-a-disaster-waiting-to-happen
Workflow
• Limited by number of GPS trackers, power supply and internet connectivity
• Teams of volunteers can do each of the 5 tasks independently
• Don’t forget to take notes while mapping
• Meet, plan, divide and conquer!
Business idea ;-)
• Collect data
• Add value to data
• Sell this value added data
• Profit!
