Magnetism

A substance which attracts iron particles/objects is called Magnet.

In addition to iron , Magnet also attracts Nickel and Cobalt.

Property of Magnet to attract specific metals is called Magnetism.

Magnetic force works even without being in contact with the object.

Magnetism

The existence of magnet was first discovered in Magnesia, a Village in Asian

Continent. A shepherd named Magnes, realised that his shoes and iron nails

attached to his stick are getting pulled towards a specific stone. This stone, one of

the natural minerals, having magnetic properties AyaskaMt Kinaja is also called as Loadstone in Middle English. After further

research various different types of magnets were discovered.

Non-Magnetic Substances

Those substances which does not

get attracted towards Magnet are called

as Non-Magnetic substances.

Properties of Magnet

The edges of Magnet are called it’s Poles.

A freely suspended magnet , parallel to horizon comes to rest in North-South direction.

The edge pointing towards south is called South Pole whereas the one

pointing towards North is called North Pole.

Magnetism

Magnet’s strength is located at it’s poles.

Magnetism

A magnet repels the like pole of the other magnet. (South-South/North-North)

Magnetism

Magnetism

There is attraction between unlike poles of two magnets.

Magnetism

Earth itself is a huge Magnet. But it’s geographic poles are exactly opposite of Magnetic poles. i.e

Earth’s geographic North Pole = Earth’s Magnetic South Pole Earth’s geographic South Pole = Earth’s Magnetic North Pole
