Some Basic Info about WATER:

o Water is essential for survival on Earth. It makes up almost 2/3 of our body weight and covers a little over 2/3 of the Earths surface. Almost all of the water is in salty seas, and we can’t use it. Only 2,5 % of it is fresh and ¾ of it is frozen.

o So only 1% of the water in Earth is available for humans to use.

o We describe water as a colorless, odorless, tasteless liquid.

o Water also comes in the form of ice in the polar ice cups, and water vapor that rises in to the air from the surface of our planet.

Where the Water comes from??

All the water that flows in steams has to come from somewhere. All of this water comes from the sky, mostly in the form of rain and snow.

Where the Water comes from??

When it rains, some water flows over the ground, eventually joining a stream. Much more of the rain water seeps down in to the soil, moving slowly underground until it finds a stream or lake to join.

Water is a critical issue for the survival of all living organisms. Some can use salt water but many organisms including the great majority of plants and mammals must have access to fresh water to live…

So people also are depended of the Water BUT …….

THEY POLLUTE IT…………

#1 Agriculture

Agricultural pollution refers to biotic and abiotic by products of farming practices that result in contamination or degradation of the environment and surrounding ecosystems, and cause injury to humans and nature.

#2 Industry

Also….

Oil spills: ….cause major problems, and can be extremely harmful to local marine wildlife such as fish, birds and sea otters and other aquatic life. Because oil does not dissolve, it stays on the water surface and suffocates fish.

#3 Human Use

Everyday, we cook, do laundry, flush the toilet, wash our cars, shower and do many things that use water. Think about how we use water in schools, hospitals and public places. Where do you think all the water, liquid waste, toilet and urine ends up?

In many developed communities, this waste water is treated, cleaned and dumped into the sea. Even though they are treated, they are never the same as fresh water.

In some not-so-developed countries, the sewage is not treated, but quickly dumped into the sea or water bodies. This is VERY dangerous because they contaminate the environment and water bodies and bring many deadly diseases to us.

Effects of Water Pollution

Page 15: Magical tour to water world- Comenius 2013-'15- Chios-GREECE

Disruption of food chain- Ecosystems

Pollution disrupts the natural food chain as well. Pollutants such as lead and cadmium are eaten by tiny animals. Later, these animals are consumed by fish and shellfish, and the food chain continues to be disrupted at all higher levels. Ecosystems (the interaction of living things in a place, depending on each other for life) can be severely changed or destroyed by water pollution.

Page 16: Magical tour to water world- Comenius 2013-'15- Chios-GREECE

Death of aquatic animals … The main problem caused by water pollution is that it kills life that depends on these water bodies. Dead fish, crabs, birds and sea gulls, dolphins, and many other animals often wind up on beaches, killed by pollutants in their habitat (living environment).

Page 17: Magical tour to water world- Comenius 2013-'15- Chios-GREECE

Diseases ….

Eventually, humans are affected by this process as well. People can get diseases such as hepatitis by eating seafood that has been poisoned. In many poor nations, there is always outbreak of cholera and diseases as a result of poor drinking water treatment from

Page 18: Magical tour to water world- Comenius 2013-'15- Chios-GREECE

Many areas are now being affected by careless human pollution, and this pollution is coming back to hurt humans in many ways.

WHAT CAN WE DO??

Page 19: Magical tour to water world- Comenius 2013-'15- Chios-GREECE

WE CAN HELP…

1. Never throw rubbish away anyhow. Always look for the correct waste bin. If there is none around, please take it home and put it in your trash can. This includes places like the beach, riverside and water bodies.

Page 20: Magical tour to water world- Comenius 2013-'15- Chios-GREECE

WE CAN HELP…

2. Use water wisely. Do not keep the tap running when not in use. Also, you can reduce the amount of water you use in washing and bathing. If we all do this, we can significantly prevent water shortages and reduces the amount of dirty water that needs treatment.

Page 21: Magical tour to water world- Comenius 2013-'15- Chios-GREECE

WE CAN HELP…

3. Do not throw chemicals, oils, paints and medicines down the sink drain, or the toilet. Buy more environmentally safe cleaning liquids for the use at home and other public places. They are less dangerous to the environment.

Page 22: Magical tour to water world- Comenius 2013-'15- Chios-GREECE

WE CAN HELP…

4. If you use chemicals and pesticides for your gardens and farms, be mindful not to overuse pesticides and fertilizers. This will reduce runoffs of the material into nearby water sources. Start looking at options of composting and using organic manure instead.

Page 23: Magical tour to water world- Comenius 2013-'15- Chios-GREECE

WE CAN HELP…

5. If you live close to a water body, try to plants lots of trees and flowers around your home, so that when it rains, chemicals from your home does not easily drain into the water.
