Three Stage In-Building

Design Concept

Page 8: M2FX In Building Solution February 2015

Challenges facing In-Building installation

How to cost effectively bring the fibre

from the ODB into the building and into

the apartment

Considerations for ensuring:

Professional cable management

Reduced equipment footprint

Timely installation

There is not always 100% customer

uptake, so further consideration for

managing:

Meet short term demand (PtP) OR

Provide for future customers (Splice)

Finding the optimum solution when

planning for a variety of In-Building

designs is the challenge

Page 9: M2FX In Building Solution February 2015

Stage 1 : Fibre to the Premises

Existing installation methods require microduct & cable

Traditional deployed in PtP format with single cable from the ODB

Time consuming to install the microduct and then pull/blow the fibre cable

Potential life cycle issues when deploying outdoor microduct

Flexible microduct life span is less than 2 years

Not scalable in medium to high end MDU environments

ODB cable management becoming un-managable

Page 10: M2FX In Building Solution February 2015

Stage 1 : Fibre to the Premises

Miniflex enables low risk and cost effective fibre connection

UV resistant in the most demanding situations (+85°C)

Miniflex can be deployed outdoors without the need for microduct

Lightweight and compact for durable installation using only wall clips

Aesthetically pleasing installation that reduces the visual footprint

Reduces the installation time which vastly increases the ROI

Page 11: M2FX In Building Solution February 2015

Stage 1 : Fibre to the Premises

1. The fiber breaks out from the curb to the premises and into an ODB

This is generally preformed by the Service Deployment team

2. Existing ODB has grown organically and will cause issues in the future

Harsh Saudi environment will lead to early end of life if remaining outdoors

3. Revised ODB installation method could bring all wiring indoors

Single connection from the Outside ODB to the Indoor IDB

1. FTTP ODB Location 2. Existing PtP Install 3. Moving the ODB Indoors

Page 12: M2FX In Building Solution February 2015

Stage 1: Fibre inside the Premises

1. Connecting the ODB into the IDB/IDF located in the building

2. Breaking out with a Pre-Terminated Miniflex Lead

3. Removing need to splice in the field with ‘plug & play’ solution

4. Brings the Point of Failure inside the building and away from damage

Now fully protected from harsh weather and extends the life

2. Miniflex Pre-Terminated Break Out Lead 1. FTTP ODB Location

QNBN Proven Success

Doha, Qatar : April 2014

Page 24: M2FX In Building Solution February 2015

QNBN Case Study

QNBN have a nationwide project to retro-fit fiber

optic cable into existing infrastructure in

approximately 100 apartment blocks

Ericsson has been selected as the integrator for

the project

20mm electrical conduit in place

Cat-6 cable already in the existing conduits

Floor level runs on average <25m

Blown fiber killing the business case

Ericsson used Miniflex LSZH 4-core fiber cable

1st Pushable fiber demonstration by Ericsson

Supported locally by two M2fx engineers

Page 25: M2FX In Building Solution February 2015

QNBN Scope

Miniflex LSZH 3mm cable complete with 2 pushable clip on brass dongle

Hand pushed into existing 20mm electrical conduits, which are

populated with existing Cat-6 cable

The typical route was estimated at 15-25 metres with 2 or 3 x 90° bends

and at least 1 conduit join

Page 26: M2FX In Building Solution February 2015

QNBN Performance

Miniflex was pushed by hand into 15 apartments up to a distance of 25m

No air blown installation equipment was used

No physical installation equipment was used

No technical skill level was required

Less than 5 minutes training from the M2FX engineers was needed

Ericsson installation teams performed the demonstration

25 QNBN technicians present and were involved in the pilot

Senior management handled the cable and undertook pushable demo

Splicing performed in each apartment with 0.05dB loss

100% connectivity and no faults detected after connection test

QNBN 100% happy and positive towards M2FX/Ericsson Pushable fiber

Page 27: M2FX In Building Solution February 2015

QNBN Conclusion

Miniflex was pushed by hand at a speed of 15m per minute

On average, saved 45 minutes installation per apartment

Over 10 buildings, this will save >2,200 hours (93 days!)

QNBN have stated that future air blown fiber installations will not be

acceptable and requesting only hand pushable fiber in the future

QNBN senior management see the huge advantages of pushable fiber

QNBN have issued Material Approval for M2FX cable

Page 28: M2FX In Building Solution February 2015

But what about the FTTH

SDU Solution

Page 29: M2FX In Building Solution February 2015

Same same but Different

Essentially SDU installation is the same principal as In-Building

Taking FTTC inside the premises via a PtP connection

Ideally suited to QuikPush and pre-termination

Page 30: M2FX In Building Solution February 2015

SDU Overview

Push or Pull installation reduces install time and cost:

Hand pushed up to 100m in new ducts / up to 25m in occupied microducts

Miniflex can be pulled up to 300m using traditional methods

Less damage to Miniflex than standard cable when pulled

No need for expensive blowing and/or compressor equipment

Pre-terminated QuikPush technology:

Ruggedised Pre-termination (one or both ends) fibre cable

Remove the need for splicing and extensive time on site

Deskill the installation teams while increasing efficiency

Proven to reduce the installation time & increase the quality

Product approval by Mobily and already used in the network

Proven business case with existing installers throughout Africa

Page 31: M2FX In Building Solution February 2015
