Facebook adds RSS for Pages

May 25

Facebook had RSS removed from pages some time ago in favor of its more technical (and proprietary) API formats.

Page 3: LUON WassUp - June 7, 2011

3

Facebook adds RSS for Pages

/what/Facebook re-established a ‘subscribe via RSS’ link to Pages. This allows users to subscribe to Facebook Page posts using RSS readers, and offers an easy way to integrate Facebook posts into a website without having to use a Facebook API.

/details/• The link, found at the bottom left side of Pages beneath the profile picture, leads to an

Atom feed of wall posts by the Page that can be auto-discovered by clients.• RSS feeds only contain posts from the Page publisher.• RSS feeds don’t contain comments or like data

/comments/For some people, having RSS access to Facebook Page posts can be very useful. If you’re tasked with industry or corporate communications policy compliance, or if you are a researcher, or if you’re access to Facebook is blocked by an employer, educator, or government it might be handy to have access via RSS feeds.

Secondly, although integration of Page posts into websites is made possible using the Facebook API, it is nice to see Facebook adopting the open RSS standard next to its own proprietary API format.

Google enters the deals arena with Google Offers

May 26

Just like competitor Groupon, Google Offers will send daily emails with local deals to subscribers, but also push notifications on mobile phones.

Google enters the deals arena with Google Offers

/what/Google takes on Groupon and the like by launching a local deals platform. Once signed up, deals will be delivered to the email inbox as well as to mobile phones using location information.

/details/• Currently launched in beta in Portland, OR only• once you’ve signed up and selected your location, an email will be sent once a day

showcasing one particular deal, just like Groupon. You can then click through and print the voucher, take it to the location and make your purchase.

• Google Offers specialists will help businesses create deals• Google will market the offer and send it to subscribers in your area

/comments/The big difference with Groupon is the mobile element. With Google Offers, you could potentially be strolling through a shopping center, receiving discounts on your phone for nearby shops while you’re there. On the other hand Groupon -with its recently unveiled “Groupon Now” platform and its potential integration into Foursquare- also has all the elements to make this happen.

Google releases Google Wallet

/what/Google Wallet is an Android app that makes your phone your wallet. It stores virtual versions of your existing plastic cards on your phone. Simply tap your phone to pay and redeem offers using near field communication (NFC). Google Wallet has been designed for an open commerce ecosystem. It will eventually hold many if not all of the cards you keep in your leather wallet today.

/details/• At launch, Google will offer a virtual version of the Citi® MasterCard® cards, as well

as a virtual Google prepaid card for people who don’t want to link their actual card to the system.

• The first phone to be compatible with Google Wallet will be the Nexus S 4G, available on Sprint. This phone will have NFC capabilities and a separate chip called ‘Secure Element’ that will hold all sensitive payment information.

• Google Offers will automatically sync to your Google Wallet• Google Wallet can store your loyalty cards for participating SingleTap merchants. When

you tap to pay at a SingleTap merchant, Google Wallet transmits your loyalty account information to the terminal so that you earn rewards for your purchase.

• initial rollout will be in New York City and San Francisco

Google releases Google Wallet

/comments/Mobile payments via NFC are hot. Visa launched its ‘In2Pay’ program, Microsoft holds 14 NFC-related patents that it could use in its new partnership with Nokia, and now Google unveiled its Google Wallet solution. Still, mobile payments using NFC will not really take off any time soon. This would first require smartphones manufacturers to start taking NFC on board of their devices.

Nevertheless: Google has now put together a smart chain of solutions taking the customer from his initial Google search over Google Offers to the in-store checkout with Google Wallet, thus controlling the full buying process from initial research ‘till purchase.

Google button for websites

/what/In March, Google launched its version of the ‘like’ button, called ‘+1’. At the time, it was only visible next to search results on the english version of the Google results page. Now, Google released a version to embed in web pages.

If you click a +1 button, the corresponding page will rank higher for your Google friends (Gmail contacts, Buzz contacts, …). The page will also show up in your Google profile, and for your Google friends, your name might appear next to the +1 button on pages you previously +1’d.

/details/• the +1 button is supported in 44 languages. However, keep in mind that +1 annotations

currently only appear for English search results on Google.com• Webmasters and advertisers will get +1 data in up to three locations: Google

Webmaster Tools, Google Analytics and Google AdWords (for data related to the impact of +1 on ad CTRs)

• When creating a +1 button for your website, it is possible to specify a javascript ‘callback’ function which will be triggered when someone clicks the button. This could for example be used to track clicks as events in Google Analytics (see previous slide for code)

Google button for websites

/comments/Google has tried several times to tackle social networking. Remember Orkut, remember Wave, remember Buzz, … But it never succeeded. And this starts to hurt, especially since Bing is using Facebooks ‘like’ data to make search results more relevant to users. So there was nothing left to do for Google than to launch their own ‘like’ button.

However, the button solves more problems for Google –getting interest data- than it does for users. The Google ‘social graph’ consists of Gmail contacts and profiles Google more or less pushed in, making +1’s a lot less relevant and the act of +1-ing a lot less likely. If someone sees +1’s from people they don't care about, it’s just noise.

Conclusion: Google still has a long way to go on the road to social.

Twitter Follow button

/what/Previously, if you wanted a website visitor to follow you on Twitter, you had to direct him away from your website to your Twitter page. Now, Twitter has launched a Follow button, enabling users to subscribe to the Twitter feeds of companies and individuals directly from their websites with a single click.

/details/• Users will still be able to preview profiles before opting to follow them by clicking the

username next to the Follow button.• Twitter is launching the Follow Button on over 50 high-profile sites including places like

AOL.com, About.me, and Huffington Post. And big sites like IMDb, MTV.com, Lady Gaga’s site, Jennifer Lopez’s site, and others.

• Currently, the button is available in English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Turkish

Google, Bing and Yahoo! launch schema.org

/what/In 2006, Google, Bing and Yahoo! came together to establish a standard for sitemaps. 5 Years later they re-joined forces to determine how their search engines will capture semantics from a web page. With schema.org, they give website developers a way of ‘labelling’ their content in HTML code so that the search engines can understand it. So that they for example know that the web page talks about a recipe, and what the cooking time is.

/details/• The solution builds upon the Microdata format• Schema.org introduces schemas for more than a hundred new categories, including

movies, music, organizations, TV shows, products, places and more.

/comments/This data will mostly be used for so-called ‘verticals’, search engines searching within a specific topic like Google Recipe Search does.

The battle for music in the cloud: Apple iCloud

/what/At the WWDC conference, Apple announced its way to handle ‘music in the cloud’ (see also WassUp presentation of May 24). The first part is ‘iCloud’, a way of storing files ‘in the cloud’. This can be used for all songs purchased through iTunes.

For all other songs, there’s iTunes Match. This service allows Apple to recreate your music database in the cloud through its partnerships with the big 4 of the music industry: EMI, Warner, Sony and Universal.

/details/• See previous slide• All the music iTunes Match matches plays back at 256-Kbps iTunes Plus quality - even if

23

The battle for music in the cloud: Apple iCloud

/comments/Although Apple outclasses Amazon and Google with its iCloud offer and its industry partnerships, it still has a weak spot: it doesn’t offer streaming your music directly to your device as Amazon and Google do. You still have to download your songs first.

On top of that, many believe that the future of the music industry doesn’t lie in buying songs, but in a subscription model where you pay a fixed monthly cost to listen to whatever song you want, streamed from the cloud. With devices becoming permanently connected to the cloud, we’ll switch from owning music, to renting music.

How Apple is killing SMS: iMessage

/what/With the launch of the new iOS 5, Apple introduced a replacement for the classic text messaging (SMS) system: iMessage. iMessage will let users communicate easily between iPhones, iPads and iPod touches. This service will include text messages, photos, videos, contacts and group messaging, with features like the ability to show delivery receipts, read receipts and indicate when another person is typing.

/details/• iMessage will work over WIFI and 3G• iMessage will be completely free

/comments/iMessage has one purpose: to kill SMS. That is, traditional carrier-controlled text messages. iMessage will do this by replacing SMS with a service that Apple is in control of across all of their iOS devices. This is much like the Blackberry Messenger service now offered by RIM and one of the reasons more and more youngsters were turning to Blackberry devices. Until now?
