University based incubators“Incubator is a hub for innovation and entrepreneurship providing office and laboratory space early-stage businesses who can take advantage of being in close proximity to eminent scientists and experts in technology.”
•Run by Universities;•Mostly occupied by in house spinouts;•Based on incentivised office space and proximity
Problem solving & consultancy
Connecting small businesses with researchers
•Hiring a consultant from academia generally not an option for SMEs.
•Yet academic consultancy helps hundreds of small businesses every year.
•Knowledge Connect, accessible via Business Link, helps SMEs fund and find the specialist academic support to help tap into academic potential.
Knowledge Transfer Partnerships
Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) is a programme facilitating partnerships between a business and an academic institution.
KTPs are funded by The Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC).
ESRC provides funding for PhD studentships where businesses take the lead in arranging projects with an academic partner of their choice.
The aim is to provide PhD students with a challenging research training experience, within the context of a mutually beneficial research collaboration between academic and partner organisations.
Collaborative R&D (KTA)Innovation Awards for Collaborative R&D
The University of Sheffield has launched a scheme (funded by EPSRC) to work with UK based SMEs in the area of `Building for the Future´.
10 Innovation Awards have been made available to initiate Collaborative R&D projects and give SMEs the opportunity to access research expertise and facilities at the University of Sheffield.
Projects are business-led and aim to develop innovative products, processes or technology in the area of `Building for the Future´.
Green Structures won 2 Collaborative R&D Innovation Awards:Thermal Accumulator &On-demand Solar CHP
Thermal Energy Storage (TES) is the temporary storage of high or low temperature energy for later use.
Collaborative Joint Ventures
Energy Unplugged - a Clean Technology start-up resulting from partnership between Imperial College London and Green Structures.
Energy-Unplugged
• We aim to develop and patent a basket of new technologies relating to Smart Grid management, Intelligent Energy Production and Energy Storage.
• We are currently looking for a collaboration with an an appropriate Incubator scheme that, in combination with EU funding, will allow for speedy development of the business.
