Genesis of Li-Fi Harald Hass, a professor at the University of Edinburgh who began his research in the field in 2004, gave a debut demonstration of what he called a Li-Fi prototype at the TED Global conference in Edinburgh on 12th July 2011.

What is Li-Fi

o Li-Fi is the transmission of data through illumination by taking the fiber out of fiber optics by

sending data through a LED light bulb

o This varies in intensity faster than human eye can follow

o It is the fast and cheap wireless communication system which is optical which is optical

version of the Wi-Fi

About Li-Fio Instead of Wi-Fi modems, Li-Fi would use transceivers-fitted LED lamps that can light a room

as well as transmit and receive information

o This technology uses a part of the electromagnetic spectrum that is still not greatly utilized-

The Visible Spectrum.

o Li-Fi , as it has been dubbed , has already achieved high speeds in the lab. Researchers at the

Heinrich Hertz Institute in Berlin, Germany, have reached data rates over 500 megabytes per

second using a standard white-light LED.

o It is capable of transmitting data at 100 MB/s

About Li-FiIssues Regarding Radio Spectrum

o Radio waveso Cost and Expensiveo Less Bandwidth compared to other spectrumso Insufficient spectrum for increasing data

o Millions of base stations consume huge amount of energy for

1.Transmitting the radio waves 2.To cool the base station cabins

o 5% Efficiency

o Less secure(passes through the walls)

o Available within the range of Base stationso Limited availabilityo Unavailable in aircrafts

How Li-Fi Workso Its working is much simply explained as follows:

o If the LED is on, the digital 1 is transmitted.

o And if it is off, the digital 0 is transmitted.

o It is possible to encode data in the light by varying the rate at which the LEDs flicker on and off

to give different strings of 1s and 0s.

Advantages & Disadvantages

o It is impossible to achieve more than 10Gbps, theoretically allowing a high-definition film to

be downloaded in 30 sec.

o Mostly powered by LEDs so it is cost efficient

o Transmission of data is fast and easy.

Advantages

o Presence of light is essential

o There should be line of sight

o Works better with fluorescent light and LEDs but very low

efficiency with bulbs

Disadvantages

Application Areas

In Aircraft Cabins

In Traffic Lighting

Street Lamps

In RF restricted Environments
