Technology Transfer in Indonesia 1992 - 2015
Successful technology transfer requires a sustained input to achieve tangible impacts.

HOW WHAT
5
Conditions for MHP capacity building
MHP capacity building in the private sector
– is market driven (hydro potential, energy price)
– can only be developed by project implementation
– is directly connected to energy policy
- is hydro power competitive with subsidised public
power supply
- is there a regulation to make MHP attractive
(feed in law, subsidy)
– requires a reliable, predictable future perspective
Projects must generate profit to re-invest into the
enterprises
6
Giz Technology Transfer Activities 1992-2012
Activities:
1. Turbine technology transfer (Cross flow, propeller,….) in design, manufacturing, installation & commissioning
2. Development and introduction of standardized civil structure designs
3. Development of Control Technology (DTC, ELC, IGC…)
4. Various appropriate technology for productive end-use activities
5. Institutional aspects
7
Example: Cross-flow turbines
Cross-flow turbines: Simple, affordable
• The runner can easily be adapted to the flow, by changing
its width. Thus it is easily possible to build the turbine to fit
precisely the site conditions.
• The simple design allows good standardisation and
manufacturing without
sophisticated manufacturing
facilities.
• The costs are low compared
with other turbine designs.

40kW rural electrification MHP (village based)
9
Manufacturing of Housing
The introduction of
precision jigs for
fabrication of the housing
etc improved quality
considerably
10
Quality control and stock
• Standardization combined with
quality control is a precondition
for:
• stock production
• cost reduction
• spare part delivery.
