DESCRIPTION
The slides from my talk at the Future of 5G Summit, held by the Connected Digital Economy Catapult (Digital Catapult) in London in November 2014. I cover industry perceptions of what 5G networking will look like, e.g. bandwidth, latency and massification factors. I also look at what Jisc is doing to help accelerate this agenda, through connectivity (the Janet Reach scheme) and support for asset sharing through our Kit-Catalogue equipment sharing database pilot.

» Registered charity championing the use of digital technologies in
research and education
» Range of shared services for UK Universities and Colleges, e.g.
- JANET, world leading research network
- Groundbreaking content deals with publishers
- Cloud brokerage with Amazon, Google, Microsoft
» Aiming to complement RCUK and Innovate UK / Catapults
- Open Educational Resources, Open Access and Open Data
- Just launched asset sharing initiative
5
MissionTo enable people in higher education,
further education and skills in the UK
to perform at the forefront of
international practice by exploiting
fully the possibilities of modern digital
empowerment, content and
connectivity

:: Glimpsing 5G :: Aspirations
» From Samsung, China Mobile, Huawei etc:– 50Gbit/s peak– 1Gbit/s generally– Speeds up to 500km/hr– Millisecond latency
» Technology challenges:– mmWave based?– Massive MIMO arrays?
– Software defined networking / radios?– New generation of backplanes?

:: Glimpsing 5G :: Aspirations
“METIS predicts that 5G networks will be at least 10 times faster, accessible in all conditions, efficient in handling very large numbers of devices, highly reliable and providing high levels of super real-time experience” – metis2020.com

:: Applications :: The three axes of 5G
» Bandwidth
– From streaming Despicable Me 5 in 8K
– …to smart sensors in street furniture
» Latency
– From Call of Duty 12 on HS2
– …to parcel tracking your next Amazon Drone delivery
» Massification
– From 90,000 FA Cup Vines
– …to a telepresence session with two V/C suites

17
:: Applications :: Conclusions
» A lot of the applications are known, but presently in the domain
of the research lab / early adopter / testbed
» Some don’t have critical mass yet
– e.g. wearables, connected home, sensor networks
» Many others are still at the R&D / prototype stage
– e.g. autonomous vehicles, white space networking
» Massification is the key
– Effect on bandwidth / throughput requirements
– Impact of latency on applications
– Regulatory regime, spectrum auction approach

:: Collaborations :: Opportunities
» Leveraging public investment in the Janet network
– Connecting industry http://www.ja.net/janet-reach
– Where next - e.g. 10Gbit/s links to Science Parks?
– Testbeds for new technologies, e.g. UHD streaming from Tokyo
Olympics, Surrey 5G testbed, Catapult centres
» What should a one stop shop for equipment sharing between
academia and industry look like?
– Sample use case: model 1,000 antenna designs via HPC, then build first
physical prototype and wind tunnel test
– Standardised terms and conditions, trialling right now with HPC
brokerage. Equipment sharing database to aid matchmaking.

See http://www.jisc.ac.uk/research/projects/equipment-sharing
» Brokering industry access to £60m public investment in HPC
» Working with EPSRC to make details of 10,000 items of research
equipment available to industry
