Unseen seeks images that cel-ebrate the photog-rapher’s eye, dis-covering beauty, banality, and the everyday; images that make the un-seen visible through light, exposure and the photographic frame are desired. The exhibition features student, amateur and profes-sional photographers working in all me-diums and styles. School of Architec-ture students Andre Gharakhanian and Jesse Cabildo built an interactive in-stallation inspired by the exhibition, incorporating the aperture of multiple lenses in one space.

Node control explores the possi-bilities for real time adjustment of spatial conditions at multiple scales. The design is intended to adapt to site conditions through a flexible structural system that expands, contract, and rotates to the will of the site. The versa-tility of the system allows for a structure that can aggregate upon itself and adhere to different architec-tural demands. Composed from a kit of parts, the sys-tem is easily adjusted at an accessible scale and has interchange-able components to maintain convenience. The adjustable mechan-ics and flexibility of parts create the structure’s versatil-ity of adaptability.

This instal-lation is a result of an intensive 6-week investiga-tion inspired by the “origami” clutch bag that is currently in prototype develop-ment at Yeh Design Lab. The two proj-ects share the as-piration to achieve volumetric trans-formation triggered by a single action. Comprised of geomet-ric facets designed to kinetically move with one another our installation at A+D showcased an assem-bly of 100+ identi-cal and intercon-nected equilateral origami modules.

This piece in-tends to domesticate the I beam by fusing an industrial mate-rial with the domes-tic nature of a cof-fee table. The piece is designed program-matically in section to create multiple surfaces of use, and in plan voids are implemented to pro-vide transparency and surface acces-sibility. The re-sulting design is a heavy mass of steel designed to maintain a visual lightness though glass voids and cantilevering surfaces.

Dockweiler Beach is a relatively desolate beach south of its main entrance, and is located west of LAX. The main en-gagement of the site occurs at the perim-eter of the beach, mainly through the bike path that flows along the street and through the actual waves that draw peo-ple to the coastline. The proposed design links both aspects of the site by extend-ing the bike path toward the waves, and conceptually bring-ing the waves closer to the bike path. A thorough analysis of the geometry of the bike path as well as a formal exercise derived from wave remnants left on the sand, influence the structure and deploy-ment of the housing program.

The cemetery utilizes the modularity and informa-tion derived from site map-ping to generate a systematic design upon the site. A cem-etery that also functions as a recreational park was the given program, with emphasis on the cemetery. The types of burials required became split between above ground and be-low ground, with a duality of urn or coffin, resulting in four different burials with close spatial relationships. The module developed created a set organization between urn and coffin, but could still adapt between above or below ground burials. Along with a burial organization the module also maintains a strict system of ADA ramp-ing and stairway circulation all along the hillside. The placement of each module is dictated by multiple con-straints of site mappings, mainly sun exposure and foli-age, while slope contours decide orientation and depth of each module. To address the duality of program a secondary roof garden system that responds to solar expo-sure was deployed to allow for recreation to occur above the cemetery, maintaining a strict segregation between programs. This systematic ap-plication of program allows for the community to both pay their respect to the dead and enjoy living.
