Universal Space, Vertical ContextIllinois Institute of TechnologyProfessor Peter LandSpring 2008

This project is a high-rise, clustered tower concept that maximizes natural lighting and venti-lation while creating accessible outdoor greenspaces. By creating a module out of inherentlyopen yet rigid towers, this project creates thepossibility of super-high density while producingdramatic open spaces as well as a network of co-dependent structures.

The modular towers that make up the complexare triangular in plan with vertical structural andcirculation cores at the corners, and eight-storeybays spanning from core to core. The bays aresupported by suspension trusses that are sepa-rated by four-storey open spaces in between. Similar in concept to the Frankfurt Commerzbankand the National Commercial Bank in Jeddah, the bays and their open spaces are staggeredfour-storeys from side to side, leaving one third of the tower open to the outside at any point.

In order to maximize light to the whole of thescheme, each individual tower as well as theoverall mass tiers from North to South, to preventthe building from shading itself. With huge garden spaces throughout as well as a mid-height ‘greenway’ that runs the width of the com-plex, this scheme creates high density with a veryopen and livable feel.

This project is a modular, wide-span canopysystem that incorporates passive interior environ-mental strategies as well as renewable energy production technologies. With a modular span of 120m by 120m, and a height ranging from 15m to 27m and endlessly expandable, it is capable of both housing entire complexes of buildings underneath it, and powering them at the same time.

The shape and make-up of the canopies allows for large amounts of diffused light, and combinedwith operable windows throughout the intermdi-ate glazing and louvered ventilation along theexterior, omni-directional ventilation. Power is generated by a combination of 30m diameter wind turbines and a concentrated solar power network. The concentrated solar power systemuses a field of heliostatic reflectors to concentrate solar radiation and superheat a thermal collector that provides steam to a generator at the base of the pylons.

To achieve the desired span, the structural system is a double-curved, asymmetrically hang-ing deck. This allows for slender structural mem-bers in the canopy and an appropriate curvature for the fields of heliostatic reflectors. The braced quadropod masts neutralize the eccentric loading of the canopies and provide the necessary height for the wind turbines and solar collectors.

This project is a ferry boat terminal for the city of Venice. As a hub primarily for people enteringand exiting the city via the airport across the lagoon, the terminal acts as a point of transition between two very different worlds.

In a context of such rich and complex history and physical character, the idea of making something that ‘fit’ seemed nearly impossible. What wasclear was that Venice is a city of fabric and of monuments, and great jumps in scale. Thisproject attempts first to separate itself from itscontext by enclosing itself within an archetypicalbox and through an internal geometry of primaryforms. By separating itself it lends an apprecia-tion of the “medieval city” through contrast, but then begins to articulate this context with the use of massive pure forms and geometries and the perforation of the facade.

Model MakingExperiencePresentation Studios International, ChicagoAssistant Model MakerNovember 2008-Present

This is a selection of models I’ve worked on while at Presentation Studios. As an assistant model maker, I participated in all phases of execution, from base construction to glazing details. Utiliz-ing laser cutting, 3-D milling, 3-D printing and hand crafting, I assisted in producing architec-tural models of the highest quality.
