A TRASGO

What is it for?

Juan A. Garzón: 2nd. Workshop on the Trasgo Project. S. Compostela Feb. 5th-6th. 2010

Cosmic ray detection is useful not only for research in cosmic rays!

- Dosimetry in airplanes, computing and telecomunication equipments, high energy particle physics accelerators environments…

- Interplanetary magnetic field measurements- Solar activity- Correlation studies between cosmic rays and climate changes- Ultra High energy nuclear physics models- Ultra High energy physics radiation with mater interaction- and other secondary uses:

- Calibration of detectors- Search of hidden chambers in pyramids- Earth subsoil “radiography”- …

A detector with outstanding performances like the Trasgo may be veryuseful for some of these and other tasks, either working alone, in puretrasgos arrays or in hybrid arrays

Juan A. Garzón: 2nd. Workshop on the Trasgo Project. S. Compostela Feb. 5th-6th. 2010

Let’s see some examples

Juan A. Garzón: 2nd. Workshop on the Trasgo Project. S. Compostela Feb. 5th-6th. 2010

Cosmic Rays Astroparticle Physics

High energy cosmic rays interact in the highest layers of the atmosphereproducing showers of billions of secondary cosmic rays that are detectedat the earth surface

Primary cosmic ray properties (direction, mass, energy) are estimatedfrom the information measured at the Earth surface

Juan A. Garzón: 2nd. Workshop on the Trasgo Project. S. Compostela Feb. 5th-6th. 2010

But…showers lose many information about their birth and to estimate the propertiesof the primary cosmic ray has many unaccuracies:

The scatter of points on a plot of the average logarithm of the nuclear mass number of the primary cosmic rays versus energy clearly shows the need for more input from accelerators.

CCOU02

… and some estimations have to be done with the help of MonteCarlos

Juan A. Garzón: 2nd. Workshop on the Trasgo Project. S. Compostela Feb. 5th-6th. 2010

Just a few tracking detectors with enough accuracy and size may providevery significative information about the shower properties:

- Density of particles- Width of the shower front- Curvature- Mean values, dispersion, asymmetries of the arrival angles- Some electrons/muons separation

Hypothesis:The increasing of measured information, its redundancy and its accuracy

(with Trasgos) may allow to improve the estimation of the primary cosmic ray.

Juan A. Garzón: 2nd. Workshop on the Trasgo Project. S. Compostela Feb. 5th-6th. 2010

A very nice exercise:

It could be very interesting to repeat the pioneering experiment done by Bassi, Clark and Rossi in the fifties to determine the properties of the atmospheric showerswith the time, position and angular resolution provided by the Trasgos.

Juan A. Garzón: 2nd. Workshop on the Trasgo Project. S. Compostela Feb. 5th-6th. 2010

[Bassi, Clarck and Rossi: 1953]

Juan A. Garzón: 2nd. Workshop on the Trasgo Project. S. Compostela Feb. 5th-6th. 2010

Other uses:

As complementary detectors for underground cosmic ray experiments

Juan A. Garzón: 2nd. Workshop on the Trasgo Project. S. Compostela Feb. 5th-6th. 2010

Other uses:

For improving muon resolution in big spectrometers

Juan A. Garzón: 2nd. Workshop on the Trasgo Project. S. Compostela Feb. 5th-6th. 2010

Other uses:

Calibration of hugh observatories

For example: Antares/Km3

Juan A. Garzón: 2nd. Workshop on the Trasgo Project. S. Compostela Feb. 5th-6th. 2010

Other uses:

Cosmic rays and Climate

GCR: Galactic Cosmic Rays

Juan A. Garzón: 2nd. Workshop on the Trasgo Project. S. Compostela Feb. 5th-6th. 2010

Other uses:

Analysis of the correlation between high energy cosmic rays and the climate changes

Correlations have been observed between the themperature of the stratosphereand the flux of muons at ½ mile underground (high energy muons):High energy(narrow) showers could be measured with the help of Trasgos

A TRASGO

Where we are?

Juan A. Garzón: 2nd. Workshop on the Trasgo Project. S. Compostela Feb. 5th-6th. 2010

2009 was a very hard yea for the Trasgo project:- Any support from the Spanish funding Agency- Any support from the Galician funding Agency- A lot of work with the commissioning of the HADES tRPC wall

But, however, we had a few significatives advances:

Juan A. Garzón: 2nd. Workshop on the Trasgo Project. S. Compostela Feb. 5th-6th. 2010

Trasgo project

- Cells developmentThe groups of LIP-Coimbra and LabCAF-USC have started theR&D of sealed timing RPCs (Talks of P. Fonte & M. F.Morales)

- A poster has been accepted in the RPC2010 conference

- 12 cells from Hades available to built the 1st. prototype

- First steps done in order to open a collaboration with Dept. ofElectronics (Prof. J. Bruguera) and the GSI (Dr. M. Traxler) toimplement the tracking and the reconstruction software in a TRB

Juan A. Garzón: 2nd. Workshop on the Trasgo Project. S. Compostela Feb. 5th-6th. 2010

A first Geant for Trasgos is ready… and well documented at the Hades Wiki page (thanks Diego!)

Juan A. Garzón: 2nd. Workshop on the Trasgo Project. S. Compostela Feb. 5th-6th. 2010

TimTrack:- 1st. article accepted in Nucl. Instr. & Meth. A- An oral presentation accepted in RPC2010 Conference- Version of TimTrack for Drift Chambers ready and being tested with

HADES MDC simulated data (preliminary results encouraging)- First test done with real data:

Cosmic data from the commissioning of the HADES tRPC wall(Talk of P.Cabanelas)

- A couple of collaborations are being opened with:Leo Alonso (Dept. of Algebra /USC)Wenceslao G. Manteiga & Cesar Sanchez (Dept. of Statistics)to explore the mathematical aspects of the method

-A collaboration opened with the CESGA (C. de Supercomputaciónde Galicia) to write the code in C language and adapted to be usedwith parallel computers or multicore processors
